USB disconnects periodically

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64

Well, not so much periodically, rather at irregular intervals. It’s a bit unnerving.

The monitor suddenly goes black, the keyboard resets, the mouse resets. And after about 2 - 3 seconds all is back to normal.

My USB setup is a bit complicated (mostly because I could). A 7 port hub is connected to a USB port on the computer. Among other things, the 7 port hub is connected to a four port hub on the monitor (Viewsonic). The mouse is connected to the 4 port hub. The PS1 keyboard is connected to the PS1-to-USB convertor which is connected to the 4 port hub.

widely discussed here: Keyboard & mouse freezes
I summarized the 3 solutions here: Mouse not working after kernel Update

The PS1 keyboard is connected to the PS1-to-USB convertor which is connected to the 4 port hub.

That might suck with that bug.
Good luck !

widely discussed here: Keyboard & mouse freezes

I am not clear how this relates to my issue. The mouse/keyboard do not freeze, they are only reset when the USB something-or-another disconnects. Or is that the auto-suspend?

Also, why does the display blank while the USB is being re-initialized?

Looking further at the <messages> log, I see that these disconnect events extend back to April, usually skipping days at a time, occasionally happening 2 or 3 times a day. I am sure I did not create the stacked USB arrangement until sometime in August.

try rolling back the kernel update and see if you still have the issue
