Usb device not responding when hot plugged in Leap 42.1

Hello the usb connected mechanical drive has been dd`ed ,partitioned and formatted in YasT but when connected in any user account session using KDE 5 or any alternative gui in Leap 42.1 the notification is displayed suggesting three actions , selecting open in dolphin… nothing happens except the led blinks for a few seconds on the Inateck enclosure …when connected to a laptop with Linux Mint 18 installed everything is fine and can create new folders in the user account newly created .

The kernel versions may vary slightly but after using Open Suse for a few releases …this has not been an issue when doing backups using the same hardware !

any suggestions very welcome !

As always start from the top. It’s good to get a handle on these problems with commands and output.

  1. What is reported by the following?
/usr/sbin/hwinfo --usb

Try to copy/paste the info pertaining to the USB-attached HDD device itself. (Using ‘–block’ or ‘–disk’ instead will also return info about this device.)

  1. Open another terminal and run
udevadm monitor

Attach the external HDD and observe the output from udev. It should show the block device node assigned eg /dev/sdb amongst other things

  1. In another terminal do
udiskctl status

The device should be listed there. Now attempt to mount it using something like

udiskctl mount -b /dev/sdb

Does it mount successfully?

When you share this output, please enclose within CODE tags (refer to the # button in the post editor).

The other thought I had about this. If you have a mixture of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports available, it might be worth checking if the behaviour is different in each type. I’m assuming the device is powered via the USB port it’s attached to?

firstly thank you for your extremely timely replies …i will post the o/p from the commands asap …yes the external hdd is powered from the USB2 port header but is compatible with USB3 also …thanks again .

KDE PV 5.5.5

Processors 2 x Intel Pentium GPU G860 3GHZ

Memory 3.6Gib RAM

Kernel Version 4.1.31-30 - default

OS Type = 64bit

After running the commands the disk is accessable but after disconnecting from the pc and reconnecting it no longer activates the kde message and is not displayed in dolphin …so i will run the commands each time before using the disk .in each session .

thanks for your help on this .

joe@linux-ckf8:~> udiskctl status
If ‘udiskctl’ is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf udiskctl

cnf udisk

joe@linux-ckf8:~> cnf udisk
udisk: command not found

Please use CODE tags when posting output as I already mentioned. Output like this is difficult to read.

Okay, the udevadm output does show your device being detected as expected. The /dev/sdb1 device should pertain to a mountable partition on the device. BTW, what filesystem are you using on the device?

Sorry about the typo with the last two commands… they should have been

udisksctl status
udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdb1
