Only other idea I have is.
Try switching back to 11.4 proper or at least the kernel
See if that changes anything
I seem to recall this helping someone else, but I can’t recall why.

This would drive me so nuts that I would make a copy of the root partition’s filesystem tree (so I could write it back if I broke it in the next steps). Then I would disable 2, 3 and 6 then add back in the opensuse-11.4-packman then run “zypper dup” to take it right back to pure 11.4. Then I’d test to see if the problem was fixed (likely, except maybe all those kernels look odd). Then I’d hook back in the correct repos exactly and run a simple zypper dup to go forwards to a new Tumbleweed. If that failed to fix it I’d reinstall 11.4 on a formatted partition, hook in the right repos and make a new Tumbleweed from scratch.

Note: I’m not recommending that for you keellambert, just saying I’d be nuts and couldn’t let it ride.

In fact I’m going to do just that cycle – just to see what happens.

There it goes – 502 packages switching. If you don’t hear from me for a couple of days, it crashed LOL

Edit: and couple hours later: been down to 11.4 and back to Tumbleweed again, circa 1000 packages changed during the round trip. No hiccups at all. IMO all that’s needed are the correct repos to go down and the correct repos to go back up.

Hi,

observation

cpu activity after removal of usb memory stick is :-

- udevd        24%
- udevd         5%
- dbus-daemon   5%
- udisks-daemon 4%
- usb-storage   1%
- total CPU usage after dismounting but before physical removing of usb mem stick 49%
- total CPU usage after physical removing of usb mem stick 68%
- after about 10 minutes total CPU activity drops to <1%

this behaviour is repeatable

is this normal behaviour, related to the OS freeze or related to other issues?

Kernel installed is Linux 2.6.38.6-30-desktop x86_64 : after update of 11/05/22

We’re up to 2.6.39-30.1. I read somewhere that a later kernel fixed the bug. (but can’t remember that with any clarity at all).

I’ve also read that this problem was solved with kernel 2.6.39-29
but it did not solve anything for me

Hi,

Lock-up and usb problems solved???

Found only hal-32bit was installed.

After hal installed all symptoms have disappeared.

Early days yet!

Hi,

With haldaemon enabled in 'System Services (Runlevel): Services: Simple Mode
usb access is now ok.

CPU usage now drops to <1% within 20-30 second after physical removal of usb
memory stick. From then on any new usb device is recognised.

No more OS lock-ups encountered with quick exchanges of usb memory devices.

Any ideas on why hal was not installed on update to openSUSE11.4/Tumbleweed or
why it was not recognised as needed dependency is Yast?

Hi,

With today’s update of KDE to 4.6.4 (4.6.4) “release 4”, the
–usb memory stick problems and
–PC freeze
appear to be fixed.

Now the CPU usage,
-jumps by 20% when a usb memory stick is inserted and mounted
-momentarily jumps by another 20% when the usb memory stick is removed
-and returns by to normal after the stick is removed, within 15-20sec.

OS still ok after deleting packages hal, gimp-module-hal, gstreamer-0_10-plugin-hal.
Did not delete hal-32bit due to wine dependencies.
OS details as follows for first mounting of usb memory stick after booting.
On subsequent usb memory u/mounts, recovery time significantly shorter.

The CPU increased power useage,
multiple usb memory mounting / dismounting,
problems seem to be now to be resolved.

Was this due to the,

  • kernel-desktop-3.0.1-40.1.x86_64 update?
    or
  • filesystem-12.1-29.1.x86_64 update?

OS: AMD Phenom™ II X4 940 Processor, 3,2 GHz
