USB device connectivity (camera, CF card reader, phone) broken in 12.3?

I confess I’m getting very frustrated with OpenSuse 12.3. I like it a lot, and it looks very polished. But I can’t understand why simple things like reading from a usb device (MSD or MTP) is so problematic. I’ve never had this issue with a Linux distro before, and my usb devices are hardly bleeding edge. Currently I have to amend /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf to change DisableSwitching to = 1 and restart, if I want to connect an MTP camera or phone, and amend it again to = 0 and restart to connect a plain MSD device. If I am lucky that will work, but more often than not it doesn’t. For example I have just done that to read a CF flash card in my card reader (should be MSD), and instead of the card reader indicator flashing as normal, it just turns on to a steady light, and the messages log reports:

No sign of the card being mounted either.

Is USB device connectivity seriously broken in 12.3? It certainly seems to be. Can this be fixed without having to change to something else like, say, Ubuntu or Mint?

TIA.

Try using a latest stable kernel as described here:-

http://kernel.opensuse.org/packages/openSUSE-12.3

Most of the times latest kernels support more devices

GNOME 3.10.1
openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop

I installed fuse software.opensuse.org: in 12.3 . After that my phone
mounted correctly and shows up in the filemanager (thunar) .

I’ve now done that and am using kernel 3.7.10 dated 23/11/2013. No improvement. The card reader works perfectly when connected to a Windows 7 x64 laptop, but not when connected to my Opensuse x64 box.

That hasn’t helped either. Having installed fuse for 12.3 and restarted I get the same experience when inserting a memory card into the reader. /var/log/messages receives the single line:

2013-11-26T09:33:26.643145+00:00 study kernel: 128.860252] usb 1-1.2.1.4: reset high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd

The card reader light remains steadily on and nothing is mounted, whereas (with Debian Squeeze) it used to blink and the card appeared in a file manager as a mounted device.

I’m sorry, my fault. You should have fuse-exfat software.opensuse.org: (for 12.3). Now it should work!

I’ve now installed the 64bit binary and restarted - but no difference. Is there something else I need to do, or are you suggesting that after the above it should ‘just work’?

I’m feeling very stupid right now. I was so sure of the soulution, but I am wrong.
I hope we got a soulution from someone. Maybe kernel. I will follow this and learn.
Meanwhile I try to research on my own. Did You post You hwinfo? Again: sorry for the misleading
attitude.

I have posted three logs below (I don’t seem to be able to attach files to this forum) - the output of “hwinfo --usb” with no cardreader attached, with the empty cardreader connected, and with the CF card in the card reader (and the blue light continuously on).

Does that give any useful information?

TIA

No cardreader attached:

This seems to be tellling me that the card reader is being recognised (device 11 attached to hub at device 4), but it is not telling me anything useful that I can see about the inserted card. Perhaps it wouldn’t. I am a bit out of my depth here. Can anyone help?

BTW I installed Linux Mint 15 as a virtual machine in OpenBox, and that can’t see the card either. Could this be because the host OS (OpenSuse) is simply getting in the way with the same problem (which suggests a kernel issue maybe), or perhaps it is the PC itself? If I attach my wife’s Sony Xperia phone to the same port, that automounts as an MTP device with no problem, and if I plug a USB external HDD, that mounts too. It just seems to be an issue with a card plugged into the card reader.

Looks like nobody is able to help me on this. In the meantime I have tried OpenSuse 13.1 (lots of problems generally) and then installed Linux Mint 15 and that ‘just works’ with everything as fas as I can establish and importantly for me I have no problems with my camera CF card, so somewhat with regret I have dropped the nicer look and feel of openSuse and ‘transitioned’ to Mint 15.

So a huge thanks to all those who helped me with this and other issues during my short time with OpenSuse. I appreciate the time and thought that has been put in to helping me, but for me with OpenSuse there are too many annoying issues that get in the way of my user experience. It’s not for me - yet.
