USB modems are tricky beasts not something I would recommend for a new user.
ADSL modem Sagem f@st 800 SuSE 10.1 x86_64 installation - LinuxQuestions.org
This is for 64bit and 10.1 but I suspect some will still hold true. Though iirc I had some troubles with a suse version change and a usb modem never did get it working though it worked on earlier versions.
With the above bit you need to find out if the default kernel has USB_UEAGLE and PPPOATM and the atm bit…
But and but …
on googling this I did find a post where someone had tried this modem on 10.3 using a 10.1 how to no joy.
Perhaps you’ll be luckier. Good luck should you manage it think a few would appreciate a how to.
But as you said you’re a new user I suspect some of this may be a little too much. Which if is the case maybe easier to get a linux compatible modem. Or find a distro where this modem is known to work could try over here but seems a little quiet UEagleAtm:PagePrincipale
USB Modems and Bridges.
Feathermonkey is on the money. USB modems should be banned from the planet. They present no end of troubles, even in a windows world.
They are bad practice. Australia has seen a massive explosion in these nasty devices. Not because of convenience and portability, but because of our population density (lack of). Easier to blanket an area with satellite coverage than to provide physical infrastructure to areas that cannot hope to pay for said infrastructure.
The internet and an OS upgrade are going to be your saving grace. Check the Linux HCL’s on linuxquestions.org and a host of OS specific sites.
Takes me back, I have a few of those modems here.
The site you want is this.
Lots of info on the web as well if you just google it.
Type: sagem fast 800 +suse and you will be online in no time.
It’s amazing when you get it to work for the first time
great post madhag!
For some people it just comes easy heh!
If you really have one lying about I suspect someone really could do with a how to.
I have to admit I used to have a speedtouch and iirc when it went from 10.1 to 10.2 I could never get it to work, where it worked fine with 10.1.
Just searching this forum is also implying the same things with this modem as this post in archive. I suspect something has changed.
How To Use Ueagle With Suse 10.1 - openSUSE Forums
I maybe wrong but didn’t Suse do something to the USB bit sure I recall vbox problems related to this, well at least at the time that was what I put it down to.
I got to a point where I could from a fresh install of SuSE, get the modem connected to the net in few minutes. I will go back in time and see if I can digg up exactly what I used to do.
All you needed was a few prerequisites installed.
Mind you, that was SuSE 9.0
If anyone wants the modems you can have them, just pay the postage.
What people used to do doesn’t seem to be working.
I got rid of the speedtouch but I never managed that repeating what I did in 10.1 to 10.2 It really needs repeating and solving by someone who can in 10.3. Googling all you used to do was plug it in and configure. Then around about 10.1 I see conflicting posts some saying doing tricks as the post I posted but was for 64bit, some still the same.
Wish I had the speedtouch now though tbh we’re seeing less and less USB questions, but still I suspect it may help someone occasionally.
Searching wiki the driver turns up on the wishlist. Searching google with 10.3 brings up lots of how do I, but I’ve yet to find the answer.
I have the Thomson and the Sagem modems, I am pretty sure I had them working in the 2.6 kernel and posted somewhere.
When I have oS 11 installed I will try and get it online with the Sagem/Thomson and post a howto if sucessful.
I dont have a spare pc to try 10.3 and at the moment I want to install 11 rc2 and get my video card working with 3D.
If I finish that quickly I will install 10.3 and try the Sagem and Thomson usb modems.
It will give me something to do while I wait for oS 11 GM
