urgent: networkmanager update did breake networkconnection

I am quite desperate. I need these days absolutely a working internet.
I did the following mistakes: not satisfied with the working (that was an error) of the networkmanager 0.7 from the repositories I tried to install the 0.71git version from the factory.
The reception of WLAN was outstanding, it connected well, but no internet at all anymore. I guessed the problem was something with the dns server. I tried to come back to the previous state installing the original version from the repository. But I must have overlooked something. Still no internet at all, even using ifup.
But now the surprise: the only application that is able to use the connected WLAN on my laptop is firefox…with tor-privoxy enabled.

All the other applications do not have connection. What did happen, where is the setting to be changed. I really NEED with the big N the use of email and internet in the comming days and TOR not always will work, because often too slow (and it will not work for POP at all).
Please help. Thanks in advance.

Ps: yes I know that I am guilty, never change a running system. But network manager is the only thing that was left to get to work better.

System: Opensuse 11.1 64 bit with KDE 3.5.10
Networkmanager 0.7.0r4379-15.2.2-x86_64
Kde networkmanager: 0.7r848570-23.2.1x86_64

Commmand
cat /etc/resolv.conf
gives:

Generated by NetworkManager

and nothing else.

I guess you have learned your lesson. Do you know the IP number of the
nameserver you should be using? If not, use one of the Google free DNS servers.

Try adding the line

nameserver 8.8.8.8

to /etc/resolv.conf

I did never specify a nameserver during install. Nor did I ever after. Why did I loose this value in /etc/resolve.conf?
I will now try to add the google server.

Is there a default nameserver Opensuse specifies during install?
Thanks

I had a backup of /etc/resolve.conf (and I did put it in a save place now!).
Good, now internet runs.
Thank you for the info. However I would like to know why the name server was “cancelled” out, when it was defined anyway? And why it wasn’t defined during the install of the git networkmanager? Thanks.

Ok, now the wireless works, the cable also. If I put my Huawei PCMCIA card in, it connects…but does not transmitt data.
cat /etc/resolv.conf gives

“search home”
and the number of the dns server I did put in from the original resolve.conf backup

Any idea what could be the problem? I ruled out firewall, on or off makes no difference.
Before the story it worked but alwas with a curious particularity:
Networkmanager would never dial the modem. But if I would open Yast, network, modem: and let the modem recongition run (without giving ok), then network manager would call and connect. Sometimes it had the same situation as now, and it connected without giving data, then it generally helped to disconnect or reconnect to the network or if even this did not work a 100% method was to press modify in yast, say ok to all the wizard and saving without any change.
This cumbersom method was the reason for me trying out the git version that caused all the trouble.
Now, the former way does not work, no way to connect.
My provider gives no dns number (only dinamic) and so I cannot even try to set up anything differently.
Anybody has a clue what I could modify to use a PCMCIA modem in 11.1?

In 11.0 it worked flawlessly. Finally, it could be a solution to change back to 11.0. Up to what date 11.0 will be mantained? A year or less? I am using KDE 3.5 anyway, so I would not have probably big losses in functionality. But I would like to spare me the work and make 11.1 turn normal.
Thanks for any input and help.
I am in an internetcafè now, to write this since no wireless available (and no cable).

I went through the /var/log messages. During the contracting of the modem I did find the following:

Jan 4 00:28:02 linux-xu0v dns-resolver: ATTENTION: You have modified /etc/resolv.conf. Leaving it untouched…
Jan 4 00:28:02 linux-xu0v dns-resolver: You can find my version in /etc/resolv.conf.netconfig

I therefore searched for “his version” in /etc/resolve.conf.neconfig and copied it into /etc/resolve.conf

So, now usb modem works (but I have to controll if cable and wlan still work).
It now gives the following log while dialing with the modem:
