Hello, this is very urgent. I have to get the system working within the following 2 hours our I am really punished.
Everything worked fine for several updates to the final system, now suddenly when trying to login dropping out at runlevel 5 and login. When doing login the system starts as root with startx but not as user. This is for me a permission problem. Only: I did not change the permissions and I did not log into as a root-X system. I just did set the permissions in yast to secure. Nothing else.
The system complains:
creating new autority file /home/user/...
(the three files .serverauth
.xorgconf
Actually he tries to create xauthority twice. He then aborts stating:
cannot move old log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
This is really very urgent to me. If you have any suggestion how to repair this without going through a new install, please inform me ASAP, thank you.
System is 11.1 KDE3.5 and KDM4 (as of original settings).
Does it work if you change back from Secure permissions? What does the
secure configuration change with regard to /var/log? Perhaps nothing.
This may be interesting (from my 11.3 laptop):
Notice that with the ‘easy’ setting Xorg has the SUID bit set. Change the
…secure file to also be 4711 instead of 0711 on this line for long-term
and to test run the following command:
sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/Xorg
If that allows you to get into X as a non-root user then the change to the
file mentioned above should keep that persistent for you.
Good luck.
