Upgrading to Leap 15

42.3

I have not upgraded to Leap 15 yet because on Leap 15 KDE Live it does not detect my ethcard (hangs on loading udev and does not load).

I cannot load the Offline Upgrade Installer with eth in bios turned on (hangs on loading udev) hence have not attempted to upgrade (off before upgrade and then turning it back on after).

42.3 still works and I don’t want to mess up my system.

I have decided to hold off on upgrading and buy a new laptop later and installing 15 fresh. The laptop is cheap and the h/w limited so getting better hardware at likely the same price seems the best deal and better solution.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed suggestions.

I wrote r8169 does not work with Leap 15 because it is not available in: software.opensuse.org

Why not downloading the Leap 15.0 ISO, burning to USB or DVD, disabling the card in Bios and than installing Leap from DVD or USB???

After that enabling the card in Bios.

Why should it be on software.opensuse.org when it is built inside the kernel?

It’s there in Leap 15.0, see my last post…

So you have not tried to install Leap 15.0 with that Live CD???

The Installation will store at disk after you have klick install in the installation settings.
Before this screen, nothing will be stored at disk.

You could also update by switching the Repos from 42.3 to 15.0…

PS:
I have build the r8101 package from the source of Realtek…
When this one is working in Leap 42.3 you can update with it tp Leap 15.0 and install the driver from that Repo.

Is there any gurantee or certainty that r8169 will work with the Leap 15 kernel or future kernels? I don’t know so I’m going to hold off. It works with 4.4.138-59 & 42.3.

It is there for 42.3 and earlier Suse versions.

I’ve read many docs on this and feel I would have limited success doing this. I prefer the offline method.

The live usb in my case does not load due to the eth h/w issue. Wireless works but I don’t like using it and for security reasons I do not.

I give up.

Hello,

Just to give an update while upgrading.

As suspected, my ethcard does not work with Opensuse 15; currently using a hardware workaround.

Ethcard: RTL810xE

r8168 does not work for this card model.

r8169 is not available for Opensuse 15.

Other than downloading the source and compiling it myself, any suggestions to get the card to work?
