The latest version of Firefox I see is 3.0.11.
Shouldn’t I be seeing a MozillaFirefox 3.5 in there? I have told the repository to update, but no cigar.
It’s there now at the repo you listed. Maybe you need to re-check the url you entered in YaST to make sure it’s correct. If for some reason you can’t get it to work you can download the rpm directly from the repo website.
Why not just fetch it directly from the mozilla.org website?
I did this myself. Unpacked the archive in a folder and then I just changed some settings in my browser icon on the desktop based on the new file path for Mozilla Firefox.
I am confused myself and new to Suse 11.1 I have the same OS as the original post. I downloaded FF3.5 form the website and extracted the files to my desktop, but upon opening it I see no install file.
You can install from an archive, but it’s ill-advised most of the time - among other things, it’s harder to uninstall again, and you won’t normally get updates. Instead, run YaST, open software sources and add this as a repository.
Give it default priority. Now run add/remove software and you should be able to find Firefox 3.5 (I think - this is all guesswork, my copy of SUSE isn’t behaving right now :()
That’s personal discretion, really. I’m running it, security flaw and all. You can get around it by disabling an option in about:config I believe, so it’s not like you’re stuck with it if you do install.
I’m confused about the suggested solutions though - is there one that says it will install firefox, but not firefox branding? If so, that sounds a lot like it might work - and isn’t likely to cause harm trying.
If you run ‘zypper lr’ in a terminal, and paste the output, it might be clearer why you’re getting conflicts.
I’m not sure what to suggest - you could maybe try sabbyman’s suggestion. If you type mozillafirefox in the search box here; Software.openSUSE.org it should give you a one-click installer for 3.5 about halfway down the page.
Otherwise, I’d say if it offers you a solution as it is, but without installing branding, try that, and see how you go.
Sorry I can’t be more use - I haven’t done this myself. Maybe give the output of the above command and see if anyone has any better ideas.
That seems like the best solution,I do see it half way down the page. So if I install it, I forget if a FF patch for the security problem comes through FF or if I need to getit through Suse 11.1?
