Upgrading to 15.0: Dangerous Nouveau dirver?

While using “sudo zipper dup” to upgrade from 42.3 to 15.0 I was asked to accept the installation of an experimental Nouveau driver. This is the only alternative, since if I choose “no” the installation is aborted. An alternative to use software emulation is mentioned in the text (see box bellow) but there is no way to select it…

Is there a way to choose a non-experimental driver? Is it safe to agree with the installation of the Nouveau DRI/3D driver?

WARNING: Nouveau DRI/3D driver selected.

This driver is considered experimental and is known to have issues with
applications that use certain 3D acceleration features of modern
NVIDIA hardware.

Symptoms include application crashes or lockups & crashes of your system’s
graphical environment. Older Hardware and less demanding applications may work
just fine and do benefit from the Hardware acceleration features this driver
offers over software emulation.

Use of this driver is especially not recommended for use with the KDE Desktop
Environment or Qt-based Applications.

The hardware vendor potentially offers alternative drivers.

Please click “Accept” if you accept the risks that may come with the
installation of this driver. Choose “Cancel” to prevent installation
of the driver and use software emulation instead.

Thanks!

As far as I know, the worst that will happen with that driver is that graphics will be broken. This may show up when you try to login to a desktop. But the Icewm desktop will still work.

Since this is blocking your upgrade, the easiest might be to just accept it. But remember the name in case you want to uninstall later.

Then if you run into problems with login to your preferred desktop, you can instead login to Icewm. And in Icewm, fire up Yast Software Manager and delete this package. And, after deleting, fire up Yast again and mark the package to never be installed.
