Upgrading 42.2 over 13.1 results in "product not compatible" warning and GRUB error 17 at reboot

Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my OpensSUSE 13.1 installation to 42.2. I have upgraded multiple major versions of OpenSUSE before.

At upgrade initialization time, I get a warning “you are trying to upgrade an incompatible product - OpenSUSE 13.1; if you continue the system may not start…”. And, indeed, if I complete the upgrade, at the first reboot attempt I get a GRUB error 17.

It does not matter if I install from scratch - I get the same result (I guess the installation software figures it can do an upgrade instead).

How is this problem fixed?

Thank you.

First, more information is needed, such as Exactly how did you do the upgrade including what medium you used and Were you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of 13.1 before moving up to 42.2.

Start by answering at least those two questions.

Also the installer can be controlled you don’t have to take the default suggestions. You want to reformat the root partition (NOT the home to save your data)

42.2 only supports 64 bit not 32bit you can not upgrade 32 to 64 you need a clean install

Thank you for looking into this - I greatly appreciate it!

I burned a DVD with the “network install” version of 42.2 and booted from it in order to start the install. When the install/upgrade was done and the installer rebooted, I let it (try to) boot from the hard drive - that’s when the grub error showed up.

The box is 64-bit (4-core AMD Phenom II CPUs), so it ran 13.1 64-bit, of course (and 12.x 64-bit before that - it’s an ancient box ;).

(To answer some of the other questions)

I did upgrade the root partition (after all, the installer did recognize that it was upgrading 13.1 though it claimed it’s not compatible) - like I said, I have done multiple upgrades of major OpenSUSE versions (and see this sort of problem for the first time) and like to keep the data in home/ to avoid lengthy restores form backup.

I know the install is customizable (always customize the set of software installed/upgraded) but I fail to see what exact customization would fix this issue…

Thank you (and everyone who replied) again!

This means GRUB legacy cannot mount partition (presumably where /boot/grub is located). Run GitHub - arvidjaar/bootinfoscript and make RESULTS.txt available, it may give some hints.

Here it is:(Part 1)

Please next time either upload file and post link (you can use http://susepaste.org) or at least use tags "code’ around your text.

Anyway, I do not see how legacy grub may be loaded based on results you posted. Did you attempt to fix it after your original post? If yes, what exactly you did?

Sorry about the long include.Next time I’ll just have a link to Google drive.

In any case, I have not fixed it because I have no idea how or even if it’s fixable. My current assumption is that this box is not upgradeable so when things fall too far behind I’ll have to get a new box (which is not that outrageous given the age of this box)…
