Upgrading 11.0 to 11.1 on DVD - repositories

Hi,

I’d like to upgrade my 11.0 to 11.1 system using a DVD. During the install, only the openSuse 11.1 repository is used so the package manager says it will remove the software I have from other repositories such as nvidia, packman, vlc.

There is an install screen that shows it is disabling all my 11.0 repositories. I’ve tried enabling those and changing the location to the 11.1 repositories, but the package manager does not honor those changes. I’d rather not have to uninstall a bunch of packages, then when the system is up, re-add my repositories and re-install the packages that were removed.

So my question is what is the method I should be using to upgrade (from DVD or network) so that I upgrade all my repositories at once?

If you must try this, (It would not be my recommendation, as I always re-install just keeping home) - The this would be the way to go.

Forget the dvd
Just replace all your existing repo’s with the 11.1 ver’s including Packman etc…

There are several approaches to this.

  1. Update all Packages Unconditionally via Software Management
    you may still need to do
    zypper dup (later from CLI)

  2. Boot to CLI level3 login and go su and do
    zypper ref

zypper dup

I have found both methods can work, but not always. Much depends on your personal configuration and package selection.

I would backup important files.

So you’re telling me that every time you upgrade, you go through the trouble of re-selecting all the installed packages you have? And you start with a cleanly formatted drive (other than /home)?

I’ll have to reject that choice. It’s ludicrous to assume that users should go through all of that every time they do any kind of upgrade.

There must be some kind of standard position that Suse takes on how users should upgrade a system, including 3rd party repositories. If not, there should be!

Yes, that is what I do.

If that is so important to you. Then you need to go for something less progressive.
Many of the the 3rd party packages available on a system that has been running 6,months or so, are not available for a new release.

It takes me about 1hr to install and add back all my necessary packages. My adsl is OK by UK standards so that helps.

There are options for your requirements. Several Debian variations come to mind.
