I had a perfectly working system(which I have fully backed up), but decided to upgrade because there were no more package updates for 11.3. I did not want 12.1 because it is too new and I would like to wait for any/all the bugs to be resolved. I did this below, and I also added the Packman repo.
Now my Amarok no longer has an equalizer(Some phonon thing is not configured), meanwhile I have gstreamer/xine/vlc all installed as backends. No matter what I do to configure it, no equalizer. My Digikam no longer works…no more thumbnails, and when I click on a blank thumbnail, it gives me a gstreamer mpeg error. Meanwhile, all the latest packages are installed with no dependency issues. I could just imagine what else no longer works. Hopefully someone knows how to resolve these issues.
So you did the update thing and it did not work out so well. Despite the best made plans off mice and men, things can go astray. Now, not all things are the vault of the upgrade. For instance, the Phonon and mixer issue is a KDE problem and you would need KDE 4.7 for that fix. I actually did mange to get 4.7 into openSUSE 11.4, but it finally blew up one weekend from making so many changes from its original setup. If you really want that to work, a major update of KDE will be required then. I suggest a clean install to openSUSE 12.1 instead. And by a clean install, you can keep your /home area, not formatting it, but just reinstalling all applications. For most other issues for media, make sure you have added in the Packman repository and then follow my suggestions from mmcheck here:
For any specific issues such as Digikam not working, I suggest a separate message thread on that one app and see if you can get help there. mmcheck should help find the issue for the others.
I don’t understand how things can work fine in an older version, and in the newer Suse versions we have problems? Suppose to move forward, not backwards. Even 11.3’s Amarok was NOTHING like the 11.1. 11.1 had visual graphics, and LOTS of features. Every time the version moves forward, Amarok loses features. Ridiculous. Gonna have to look for another program for music. Thanks for the reply.
So you are right that when some issues come up it can be a discouragement to you and I understand that. When you look at a Linux distribution like openSUSE, its many parts like the desktop versions and kernel versions and application versions are all in constant motion. Security upgrades often force other changes we are not prepared for. I can say that openSUSE 12.1 is now very mature and worth a look. And recently, KDE came out with 4.8 which also worth a look, though a possible danger to upgrade into openSUSE 11.4. I would try to get a sense of where you need to go and attack each problem one at a time and not get down on the total lot. We will help you in any way we can.
IMO the “problem” is that the Linux world (not just openSUSE) is moving to implement PulseAudio with all its promised benefits. You do have the option to disable Pulseaudio but if it’s working for you, it’s better to build on what’s working rather than to return to older technologies.
BTW - Take a look in the repos (ie. search “pulseaudio”) – You’ll see an equalizer module. I haven’t tried or run many of those optional modules which weren’t installed by default, but recommend you try it.

I cannot comment on the other discussions in this thread, but can tell
that running 11.4 with KDE 4.8 is absolutely no problem at all. I did it
since the KDE 4.8 repo for 11.4 was available since I upgraded the
machine only a few days ago to 12.1 (so for quite a while). I could not
find any adverse effects with it in 11.4.

Pulse audio is listed in the Amarok Phonon configure section. I clicked test pulse audio, it works, but it does nothing for my equalizer. I cannot configure phonon.

To make this a little bit more precise (I checked the install dates) I
installed 4.8 on 11.4 on Jan 30th on my netbook which I use every day up
to 12 hours or more without problems.
I think if there were real problems I would have seen them in the about
6 weeks of every days use.
As my personal conclusion I can only recommend it with 11.4, it
performed better on my netbook (but that’s more a feeling) than the 4.6
the 11.4 version came with.

The equalizer does also not work for me with KDE 4.6 on my PC it works
with KDE 4.8 on both 11.4 and 12.1.

Success! I removed 33 xmms packages with YAST, and now it works perfect! Glad that is fixed. Now I just have the Digikam issue, and the kdesu unmount command issue.
wrt updating KDE, to add a different view, I never update further than the stock KDE (and any security patches). IMHO going to KDE4.8 and newer … etc … is for those more adventurous than I. My KDE4 on openSUSE-11.4 runs fine.
Don’t know if you made a typo, but any “unmount” command is not going to work. The command is ‘umount’, not ‘unmount’.
To the equalizer issue: the KDE 4.8 packages are available for 11.4, that would bring back the Amarok equalizer.
No, the unmount encrypted container command was a completely different issue I had. I resolved that issue. Only issue left is my Digikam does not work.
