Upgrade to Leap 15.6 question(s)

Toshiba(Dynabook) legacy c70 laptop w/wifi dongle & Sauerlands wifi repo, which I prefer. Not sure I trust 15.6 kernel module to recognize the dongle.

1- is Ethernet REQUIRED to upgrade to 15.6?
2- will the ‘upgrade’ option on the USB stick handle the OpenSuSe repo “releasever” changes ? While on WiFi connection?
3- or—-> better to use zipper dup?
4- my only problem with the ‘dup’ upgrades is they reinstall that awful bloated LibreOffice package by default. (NOT EVERYONE NEEDS IT).

It should be possible over WiFi.

If you don’t want LibreOffice, then remove it and lock it so that it is not reinstalled.

I recently upgraded my wife’s laptop to 15.6, and can confirm that you absolutely can do it over wifi. I prefer using zypper dup to do the upgrade, because you can start with using zypper dup -d (with the releasever switch) to pre-download everything needed, just in case there’s an issue with the download (because that will pre-download the packages - then when you rerun without -d, it’ll use a local copy of the packages, provided nothing else has been updated).

There is no need for -d option, since download in advance is the default.
From zypper manual:

Download-and-install mode options:
–download-in-advance
First download all packages, then start installing. This is the default.

Sure, I just prefer to do the download as a separate transaction from the installation, particularly when I’m upgrading multiple systems at the same time (I have several VMs that I also update/upgrade at the same time, so it helps me to keep track.

You should read up the difference between -d (--download-only) and --download-in-advance

@hui thanks this is a very useful clarification. I was also convinced that the 2 inputs were identical… Fortunately I always used zypper dup -d because I was convinced it was an abbreviation of the type “in” as in “install”

OK, it’s time to bring the temperature down here, as this side discussion is not really helping the OP with their question.

What I intended to express is that you can fully download the update/upgrade first, and then run the update completely disconnected if necessary. Yes, a normal install downloads before installation (it’s pretty obvious, I think, that downloading has to happen before installation, and anyone who watches zypper do its thing knows that it does a download of everything before doing the installation).

I’m going to recommend that, short of helping the OP with their question, everyone take a breath and step back, and remember to treat each other with kindness first and foremost.

@nrickert, Thanks! I did use WiFi, and it went smoothly. I used the ‘download in advance’ option.
The only ‘scare’ I got was after the retrievals, and during the install phase, my wifi connection went from ‘limited connectivity’ to completely NO connection. After the reboot. ALL was well.
I think next time I will bring it up to the modem so I can connect with Ethernet, just to save this old heart a bump!
I didn’t mean to cause a long discussion about the usage of ‘dup’ options. But I hope they are helpful to others.

In my experience, it is faster, cleaner and less risky to upgrade from ISO. Upgrading with ‘dup’ can fail for many reasons and all the packages you have already downloaded, have ‘eaten’ space that you may need in the upgrade. This has happened to me. However, if you upgrade from the ISO, you won’t take up extra space on the system disk because the necessary files are already in the ISO.
