ok, i thought this would be soo ovbiously easy i could work it out for myself…
now 11.3 is out, how do i upgrade from 11.2 (i presume theres an upgrade path via repo’s than dvd/cd install)? i’ve tried ‘Software Update’, but comes out with no found updates.
I suggest a clean install, but if you insist on upgrading your existing install, you must change the repos to the 11.3 repos, then do:
zypper ref
zypper dup
If you have added repos to your 11.2 install, you may have to reinstall a lot of apps. IMHO a clean install, then adding whatever extras you want to use, is the best way to go.
PLEASE follow Caf’s advice/link. it’s better than this.
thats fine then; clean install it is!
i’m used to ubuntu where when you scan for updates it tells you on that a new release is available and will upgrade an existing system.
including 11.3 install, that must be about the 8th OS install this week! fun fun
BTW here is a screencast I created for upgrading 11.1 -> 11.2 with Zypper. The procedure is still exactly the same, so you can just replace 11.1 with 11.2 and 11.2 with 11.3 and you are good to go
upgrade wont do it. zypper update is the same thing as acquiring the updates from your current system. It will not update/upgrade the entire system. Next time, do try to read the entire article. SDB:Zypper usage - openSUSE (Note, this is the same article, just more precisely linked to the specific part that you need).
It depends of the amoungt of software installed, I upgrade a server
downloading only around of 500 MB, but for a workstation with GUI sounds
like a zypper up and not a zypper dup

You may have the base packages updated to 11.3 and therefor an “11.3 system”, but that does not mean that every package in your system was upgraded. The only way to do this is with zypper dup.

What version of openSUSE did you have before?
> any idea how to fix this?
Well… you may learn what library version is supposed to provide that
and install it.
Or, if you can remember what rpms were just installed by the zypper in
zypper command (id didn’t produce errors?), reinstall them from the DVD
of the system you were running, not 11.3 - ie, undo.
And after that, perhaps report in bugzilla. But first, tell what
version of system you have.
My guess is that your base system is too old and the upgrade
instructions have to be modified to handle your case, if possible.

I’m about to upgrade to 11.3 from 11.2. I’ve never upgraded openSuse before so I don’t know what to expect. Should I prepare for a lot of problems or is it generally ok? And what about the impact on performance? My friend has recently upgraded Ubuntu and the system became very slow.
I would like to avoid clean install but I am not sure whether the result of upgrade is worth it. What would you recommend?
