Upgrade to 11.0, Move mail etc

I have two hard drives, one with 10.3 and one with the lastest distribution
of 11.0. Using kde3 3.5.7 on 10.3 and 3.5.9 on 11.0 Whats the best way to
move mail, etc from one to the other. When i copy to DVD it changes the
group permission to root and makes most stuff read only. I then have to go
thru and change everything. Is there and easier way?

Thanks.

Maybe you can use a usb stick.
Isn’t it possible to copy and paste from one drive to the other - or are they on separate machines?

Make sure your uid/gid on both systems match (type ‘id’ in each and
compare) and tar everything up (tar /path/to/tarfile.tar /path/to/backup) and when you extract it do so as your user and you
should be fine (tar -xvf /path/to/tarfile.tar).

Good luck.

The idea to create HOWTO is OK, but there is so many possible configurations
that really good HOWTO is almost impossible to create.

Basically, it is easy:

  1. Backup you data in your /home directory.

  2. Check http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_11.0

  3. boot from DVD and select update existing system, or if you have spare
place on hard disk than you can select install new system

  4. If you have issues ask for help in opensuse.org.help.install-boot-login
    forum.

There are other options, but what is most suitable depends on your software
and hardware configuration.
