Upgrade NVIDIA from G05 470 to G06 580

Alas, I only have one Leap 15.6 system left running and that doesn’t run any desktop environment… You can always force the re-install of the nvidia-driver-G06-kmp-default to let it rebuild.

I am still plagued by sometimes getting black screen when loading SDDM Login Manager.
This morning I had to boot 8 times to get SDDM to show.

I will try to reinstall the NVIDIA drivers. But somehow I do not think that will solve this problem.

I see I have mixed two issues here.

My first post was regarding upgrade on my older Leap 15.6

While 3 days ago I wanted to Install NVIDIA drivers on my Tumbleweed Laptop. Should have created a new discussion for that, but alas, what is done is done.

I reinstalled all NVIDIA Packages, but that did not help.

zypper in --force kernel-firmware-nvidia nvidia-mmon-G06 nvidia-compute-G06 nvidia-compute-utils-G06 nvidia-driver-G06-kmp-default nvidia-driver-G06-kmp-meta nvidia-gl-G06 nvidia-libXNVCtrl nvidia-modprobe nvidia-persistenced nvidia-userspace-meta-G06 nvidia-video-G06 nvidia-settings libnvidia-gpucomp libnvidia-egl-x111 libnvidia-egl-wayland1 libnvidia-egl-gbm1

This time I tried booting 16 times, but every time I got a black screen instead of SDDM.

On that 16th time, I switched to a console (CTRL+ALT+F1) and run

systemctrl status sddm

It was not running, so I run

systemctrl start sddm, and suddently SDDM Login Manager popped up.

Then after logging in, something strange happened. SDDM Login Manager popped up again, after logging in again I came back to the same KDE session.

KDE is now running on tty1, while another SDDM is also running on tty4.

I checked the boot log when I got a black screen, and SDDM processes was running.

I also tried to install the package sddm-config-wayland, to run SDDM on Wayland and not X11, but that did not load SDDM at all, no black screen either, just straight into the console.

Switch a different login manager?

What options are there for different login manager with KDE?
I know they are working on a new Login Manager, but it does not look ready yet.

If I do not find out how to fix this Black screen SDDM, I will uninstall NVIDIA drivers. I do not see any use for them on my laptop since the Intel GPU is running everything anyway.

You can use essentially any display manager (eg LightDM, GDM). They will allow you to choose and launch KDE Plasma as long as Plasma is installed properly.

I took a look at the alternatives on this, and I must say I did not like any of the alternatives to SDDM.

Currently I am running SDDM on X11, while KDE Plasma runs on Wayland. Still trying to find out how to get SDDM to also run on Wayland, but that is a different issue/discussion (lets not take that here).
