Upgrade from SuSE 11.2 to 12.1

Upon reboot after an on-line update from 11.2 to 12.1, GNOME reports:

“The panel encountered a problem while loading:
OFAIID:Gnome_ShowDesktopApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_ClockApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_WorkplaceSwitcherApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_TomboyApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_WindowListApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_NotificationAreaApplet
OFAIID:Gnome_MainMenu”

The Terminal program will not load (no doubt due to one or more of the above).
Can’t shutdown from CTL-ALT-F1, then “shutdown now”, perhaps due to a change in the shutdown instruction.
Upgrade from 11.2 which was otherwise reasonably stable was attempted due to disk corruption during file copy.
Should an attempt be made to reinstall Gnome?
Any help appreciated. System is a Dell Dimension 3000.

Moving from 11.2 to 12.1
Should have been a new install

That is. Backup data
Format everything in current install
Install 12.1

How did you perform the “online update”? e.g. zypper dup?

I would have done a clean/new install, possibly first testing it on a separate partition.

Online update is only supported from one version to the next.

I would try with a new user.
