Upgrade from 42.1 via DVD: UEFI, Disk out

First let me say the process was successful, 42.2 is now installed and running.
Two puzzles encountered on the way:

  1. On boot, I needed to tell my BIOS to go to the DVD. However there were two entries for the DVD, one prefixed with UEFI: and the other not. I chose the “not” alternative and all seemed to work fine, but not sure why there would be the two entries, and if I would have had some advantage by choosing the UEFI alternative.

  2. Once the upgrade was complete, I assumed that the reboot would be able to ignore the DVD still in the drive, but any selection from that point just resulted in a message “you have to load the kernel first” even from the “boot from hard drive” option. The problem was solved by popping the disk, then all went through fine. I think it would have been helpful if the system had said “remove the disk”; maybe it did and I missed it…

EFI is a boot method the other is MBR if you dual boot all OS must use the same method or you will have problems. Change method without understanding the issues can also lead to problems. These days it is best to simply stick to EFI booting rather then messing with the old MBR boot unless you have a very good reason.
