Upgrade from 12.1 to 12.3 failed.

Currently having trouble with network issue,
so i had been suggested to upgrade OS version

here what i do according to the suggestion

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/ repo-oss
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/non-oss/ repo-non-oss
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.3/ repo-update
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.3-non-oss/ repo-update-non-oss
zypper dup

then first output i encounter is

Retrieving package bridge-utils-1.5-12.1.1586 (1/1501)32.0 KiB (66.0 KiB unpacked)
Media source 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/' does not contain the desired medium

Abort, retry, ignore? [a/r/i/?](a):

any idea what is this ??

I’ve seen the other thread, and though I see that between adding the repos and the zypper dup, a

zypper ref

is missing, I strongly suggest you perform a clean 12.3 or better a 13.1 install. That would at least make sure the ones trying to help you know what they’re dealing with. Plus, even more imortant, it would show you that it all can work.

Try adding “suse” to the standard OSS repo’s URL, in YaST->Software Repositories f.e. or run:

zypper rr repo-oss
zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/suse/ repo-oss

This shouldn’t be necessary, but you’re still using 12.1, I don’t remember how it was back then.

A “zypper dup” from 12.1 to 12.3 is not supported. If it destroys your
system, it is your problem.

Besides that, the code snippet is incomplete, as you previously have to
disable all existing repos.

Then before running dup, you’d better upgrade the zypper and rpm stack.

Alternatively, you can do an offline system upgrade, which may support
such an upgrade.

This started from the other thread about the static IP address not sticking.
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/network-internet/492995-static-ip-doesnt-take-effect-after-reboot.html

He doesn’t run 12.1 anymore, he has a mixed system of 12.1 and 12.3.

And he should have removed all repos already, at least that was the first line I told him to run.

Ok, then he has to use the DVD offline method. His system is not working.

And why not try to bring the system to a consistent state with “zypper dup”?

He can still use the offline method anyway (maybe even do a fresh install) if it doesn’t work.

Waste of time, IMO. The DVD boot and choose upgrade method has been
known to recover worse situations.

zypper dup should as well.
There’s nothing magical the DVD does to fix such situations.

Anyway, I don’t want to discuss this again here.

The OP should choose what he prefers.
As far as I am concerned he could also just disable NetworkManager.service to fix his IP address problem and keep the current system if he doesn’t have experience other problems…

Not magical, technical. It runs from a sound system, while the system to
upgrade is offline. It does not use the toolchain in the hard disk, so
it does not matter if zypper is broken, network does not run, whatever.
The system can be parts one version, parts another, parts missing.

The only thing it requires is that some configuration files are correct,
specially the rpm database.

Perhaps.

It is his choice, obviously.

And “zypper dup” just needs a working rpm and a working network obviously.
I rescued systems in a worse state in online mode.
And I upgraded dozens of systems with “zypper dup”. I even did it with YaST->Software Management a few times, but I won’t really recommend that. (it can take a while until you finally resolved all dependency conflicts… )

But enough of that now…

Thanks guys for the feedback. Appreciated your guys suggestion.

if run from CD/DVD, i need to get through boss and stuff.

so i think i will try “dup” first.

worst come to worst…i will just do refresh installation.

i run through all this hassle cause my boss want to keep the developed application inside.
although we have backup but no technical guys who need to maintain the application.

i will come back later once i tried again …

tried using dup…seem working,
but got one problem which it bring back to first problem…the IP address

now i manually set and up the eth1, it works for while and then the ip gone again.

the download failed.
keep trying…keep repeating the same issue.

guess that it for this server.

Thank you very much guys.

you all been a great help.

As I said in the other thread, you may have to disable NetworkManager manually.
Try switching to NetworkManager in YaST and then switching back to ifup.

done upgrading.

thanks wolfi323, appreciated your help.

rotfl!

Done? Why don’t you try the boot DVD and choose upgrade method?
