upgrade from 11.4

Hi, with open suse 12.2 just days away, am really needing to update my current system which is running 11.4, but have a few questions with regards to upgrading.

Is it possible to upgrade from 11.4 to 12.2?

  1. with my current setup, i have maintained certain repositories to the current versions (KDE and Libre office) so they are the latest versions. Now if i were to do an upgrade, would it damaged my configuration as it may install a slightly older version?

  2. i also have printers setup and connected to the home network for network printing. How do i keep those configuration settings from cups and samba, as really do not want to have to set the whole network thingy up again as was quite a challenge?

  3. Would it be better to do an upgrade or a fresh install?

IMHO
Backup you /etc directory most configs for the sub systems you mention are in there
DO a fresh install and no NOT format home.

You can try an upgrade but unless you know what you are doing it can be more pain then it is worth.

Not IMO
Backup and do a fresh install

I’d tend to agree. I’ve done zypper dup upgrades myself in the past and
while they’ve gone smoothly, unless you know what you’re doing, if things
go south, you’ll end up rebuilding from scratch.

I’d also do an:

rpm -qa > installed-rpms.txt

That’ll keep a list of the installed packages. There may be differences
between the old and new version’s system packages, but that’ll help you
keep track of what’s changed and anything you’ve installed separately
that will need to be reinstalled.

In addition, a backup of /etc is always a good idea, as gogalthorp said.

Of course.

You can do an off-line upgrade over two versions. Read the documentation in the wiki first:

Online upgrade method
Offline upgrade method

As part of the procedure, all repos are disabled. Later, after you test the system and have it
running satisfactorily you can add the versions of those repositories for 12.2, if they exist
already. Check before the upgrade if that is an issue.

System configurations are maintained. The procedure is detailed in the afore mentioned
documentation, so I will not explain how here.

IMO, an upgrade - but it is a matter of personal opinion.

Brilliant,

I was just going to ask, having an even older system (11.2) I mainly use it as a host for Virtual Box but also use dolphin/Nautilus/Firefox/Evolution, basic stuff.
Will try an upgrade simply because I have never done it before, if it fails I can always reinstall since I have /Home and mu vbox on /Data partitioned.

Absolutely.

The procedure recommends having a full backup to be able to go back to, in case things break badly -
or just to check on an old configuration. With a proper safety net you can do even dangerous things

Yep,

Just did the upgrade from 11.2 to 12.2 and it works just fine.
I thought it didn’t until I remembered I had an Nvidia card, just started yast (in init 3) and added the nvidia repo, re added the kernel so it auto detecded my card, installed and rebooted.
Perfect.
Now it’s just some other programs like vbox from Oracle and wimp (norwegian music streaming) to install, wimp uses adobe air but still works.

Thanks
