Upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 caused a strange issue.

It’s still the wireless problem. It worked all day Sunday, but after I shut the laptop down and turned it back on this morning it was back giving me de-auth reason 3 again. So I loaded 12.1 RC1 from the live cd and it connected immediately, so it doesn’t appear to be my AP’s fault, and all my other wireless gadgets still connect ok.

Oddest part is it still works perfectly well in my office, but it wont connect to the coffee shop next door, nor any other AP. I have everything set to be controlled by the network manager.

I tried using another AP with open/wep/wpa/wpa2 encryptions and it would not connect to any of them. Just ask for the password, then auth/deauth cycle until I told it to disconnect.

Can we just stick with one release at a time?

Can we address 11.4 (Is that what you are using)?
And did you switch to ‘wl’ or not?

I was going by what Larry had suggested, and my comment about the Live CD was indication that the AP was in fact working correctly. Also I haven’t switched to wl yet. I’ll give that a shot, but I was hoping to continue using the b43 driver if possible.

I’m still not certain if we are working with 11.4?

Another option in 11.4 would be to switch to kernel 3.1
And keep b43

For the record, that is not a driver number - that is a firmware version.

Yes we are dealing with 11.4 and switching to wl didn’t work out as planned. I’m not sure if I missed a step, but I have to load the module on every boot just to get my device to be acknowledged as eth1. However my wireless settings are greyed out, and it says disconnected permanently.

I do have he correct kernel installed.

Larry, you’re right it’s my firmware version. I misspoke.

Then the next step is try the upgraded kernel and try b43 from there

Index of /repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard

Kernel Updated, reapplied b43, and still the same error…sigh.

I know I’m driving you guys crazy with this, but thank you so much for continuing to work with me on this!

So did you say it was trouble free at the office?
And not so good elsewhere?

What are the differences with the access points?

Office has an old Belkin Wireless G with WPA2 Personal, Home has Asus WL-Premium V2 running DDwrt- v24SP1 with WPA2 Personal, Starbucks has a Linksys WRT54Gv4 I believe and is unencrypted. Most of my clients run either WPA or WPA2 and I used an old WRT54G V5 to test if it would connect to anything from open to WPA2 personal and no go.

So are you saying it doesn’t work on any of these access points?
Sorry to be so slow with this, it’s just I deal with so many threads a day
I know you mentioned it connected with the 12.1 Live CD, but you would need to load the firmware?
(I have to sleep very soon)

Hey man it’s cool and yes it works with the 12.1 RC1 live cd. I do have to load the firmware as IIRC Suse can’t distribute it for legality purposes so I have to run the install bcm43xx in superuser mode, but after that it works perfect.

It looks like you’ll be installing 12.1 then?

Hmm I got into this mess running a distribution upgrade. Do you think the issue wont persist with another? I think it’ s something configured incorrectly as it seems to only work with the connection I used to upgrade it last time. Hmm, and I just got Gnome customized to my liking too.

If at all possible I would like to try a fresh network setup. Is there anyway I can reset all my Network Settings back to 11.4 default. Uninstalling and re-installing holds over my settings, so I assume there is a config file, or a few that still have saved information in them. Wiping them back to whatever default there would have been had I installed a fresh copy of Opensuse may correct this. At least that is my theory, but I’ m not sure how to go about doing it and google hasn’t yielded the results I want.

If that doesn’t work then upgrading to 12.1 would seem like my only option, before a complete wipe and fresh install. Which I hope to avoid at all costs.

Thanks again everyone,

I’d advise a complete fresh install every time any way.

I don’t.

Something I always do before upgrading is testing the next version on
another partition of the same machine. If it has issues I can not solve, I
stay put. If it works, I upgrade. If the upgrade fails, I can compare.

Did you try with a new user?

Yes.

If you are using the traditional method, the configuration is held in
/etc/sysconfig/network/*. If you are using the applet, the configuration is
held under your user - although I’m not sure in this case about modules you
load.

Unfortunately, I just relied on compatibility information instead of doing a field test prior to my install. A mistake I won’ t make again.

I did try with a new user, and the issue persists.

I currently use nm-applet, and the default network manager with everything set to be controlled by Network Manager. I did attempt it running Netconfig with the same results, whether DHCP or Static addressed.

Sorry. An unfortunate situation.

Sorry for the delay everyone, but it started working after Opensuse locked up and I was forced to hard restart it. It’s worked for the last 2 days at work, the house and everywhere else I have tried it. I’m a bit skeptical after having fought with it for the last…week…two, but hopefully it stays working.

I’m going to test it a little more before I feel comfortable marking this solved, as it worked for a day before and quit. I’m a bit on edge about it.

Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone once again for all the trouble they’ve gone through with me. It means a lot to me!
