Upgrade 11.4 to 12.1 and new install was a bit of a drama

Hi all

First the good news. I used my media box (hardware about half year old) as a play environment for beta, RC1 and Rc2. Beta and RC1 I encountered the reported issue with not being able to select additional SW during install. RC2 was ok.
Since I had only play data I did a new install, which went without a problem !
Could add repros etc…all worked.

My laptop, Asus intel 2 core 4 years old, I tried an upgrade which ended up with a suspected video driver issue with an unreadable screen. Reboot did not make any difference. Can’t recall if I tried reboot in fail safe mode. So since the data on the laptop where all secured, I did a fresh install. Same issue. Here I did reboot with fail safe, which worked. Went into yast and run an update to get all new packages. I also noticed that an intel video legacy driver was installed which I did not alter. Should have taken some notes to document all the steps…hey I just wanted it to work.
Anyway, did reboot and everything was fine. Success.

For my main machine, hardware about a year old, I secured all user data including my mail. Did an upgrade. During upgrade the system froze during automatic reboot. I restarted the machine and was prompted to “config not completed”…something like that. Put the installation DVD into the drive and off it went. This resulted in scrambled screen.
Did Ctrl-Alt backspace backspace and with some imagination I could see the login in screen. Rebooted with failsafe, which worked.
…I did not document all the steps but I got it to reboot.

Kmail did not work, the whole thing was not responsive. I saved some additional data and did a fresh install, which worked. Adding repros worked and I got all the SW I had before.

As a conclusion, update did not work for me ?!???

The question I have is: Where does Kmail now store the e-mails ??? could not find it ! My saved e-mails can be read with the new Kmail, just need to know where to put them.

cheers from OZ

On the positive side

The system appears to be more responsive !!!
