im trying to update the kernel to 2.6.27 but I have never done such a thing so I am not too sure how to do it.
where can I download an rpm package? or how can I use the patch file from kernel.org to update?

My first question would be “Why do you need to upgrade”.
What is your experience? You can just download from factory and install that one (it may break networkmanager).
Or you can download source, and build a vanilla rpm.
If you don’t have hardware that needs it, I’d say just stick with what you got and update when you upgrade :o).
With that said I’m updating to 11.1 Beta 2 (on my work Production Machine) right now…
yes i do need it, i have an intel 5300 wifi chipset that is supported on the new kernel and would like to upgrade to be able to use it.
even if i dont need it, i would like to know how to do it…
I had the same problem… i bought lenovo x200 with the same wireless card. What I did I used Webpin to find new repository that has the new kernel. I have tried two of 2.6.27 kernels… release 3 and 7… the last one broke my suse… but release #3 is fine.
Try this repository: Index of /repositories/Kernel:/Vanilla/openSUSE_11.0
The Kernel:HEAD repository houses the kernels that make their way into the distribution. But I would just use Factory as it is what is included in 11.1 Beta 2.
I tried using the repository provided by lukes but the only device that I got working was the bluetooth, the wireless was still down and did not work at all. I next tried installing suse 11.1 beta 2. everything worked properly under 11.1, wireless bluetooth, all devices, but then I cannot install any applications since they ar enot compatible…
I tried installing mp3 and mpeg4 codecs but the ones provided by opensuse community did not have instructions for 11.1. and I wanted to downgrade python to 2.5 however I would need to uninstall many new applications such as evolution, gnome and others since the new versions require the new versoin of python.
can anyone help me install those software? should I go back to 11.0 and try to fix the wireless issue?
i was able to get it working!! =D
the reason I really needed to upgrade was because of my wireless, I looked around for a solution alot last month but I did not find anything. I decided to look again and I found a post about the same topic and someone giving a link to the intel driver site.
from here I installed the 5000 ucode and restarted, and everything worked perfectly fine, I am currently running 2.6.27rc5.
Thanks alot to everyone who helped out
