update to plasma5 failed

Hello,

I use tumbleweed for months now without any big problems.
At the beginning of the week, I wanted to see the new Plasma5 desktop and started a “zypper dup”. After that, I have no running KDE anymore.
It is a mix of KDE 4.14.9 uand 5.3 installed and nothing runs. I use IceWM at the moment, but like to switch back to KDE.
In Yast, Software, Schemata (in german), I have “Plasma 5 Desktop” and “KDE Desktop Environment”. Most KDE apps are still 4.14.9.

Any idea how to get a running KDE again?

Thanks

Regards
Uwe

And how exactly is it not running?
What happens when you login to the KDE session?

Try to run “startkde” in IceWM, does that give you a KDE desktop?

Maybe the problem is related to the graphics driver. Plasma5 (and even Qt5) makes more heavy use of OpenGL.
What chip/driver are you using?
Please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Have you tried booting to recovery mode?

Have you tried a fresh user account?

It is a mix of KDE 4.14.9 uand 5.3 installed

That’s normal.
Many KDE applications are still KDE4 based and need the KDE4 libraries.

and nothing runs.

What does “nothing” mean?
Have you tried running KDE4 applications in IceWM? KF5 applications? YaST?
Maybe run “kwrite” (KF5 based) and “ark” (KDE4 based) in an xterm and post possible error messages if one of them doesn’t run.

My repo list

I don’t really see a problem there.
Except that you miss the update repo, but that’s empty most of the time anyway and is only there for emergency cases.
And you shouldn’t have repo #4, that’s the old Tumbleweed repo, remove it. But it’s empty too anyway, so definitely not the cause of your problems…

There was no chance to login to KDE, KDE was missing in the selection menu

Try to run “startkde” in IceWM, does that give you a KDE desktop?

There was no “startkde” available, but that gave me the idea for the solution. plasm5-workspace was installed, but startkde was missing. So a "zypper in -f plasma5-workspace " reinstalled the package and than startkde worked and opended a KDE desktop.

So it works now.

Maybe the problem is related to the graphics driver. Plasma5 (and even Qt5) makes more heavy use of OpenGL.
What chip/driver are you using?

Nvidia GS8400 SE with Nouveau driver

Have you tried booting to recovery mode?
Have you tried a fresh user account?

Yes, no change before reinstall plasm5-worksapce

Maybe run “kwrite” (KF5 based) and “ark” (KDE4 based) in an xterm and post possible error messages if one of them doesn’t run.

There was no chance to select a KDE Desktop, the programs kwrite, ark and Yast were usable in IceWM.

Thanks

Uwe

Ok. The “KDE Plasma Workspace” and “Plasma 5” login screen selection entries are part of the package plasma5-session. So if the entry is still missing, (re)install that too.

But the entry is hidden if “startkde” doesn’t exist, so it’s there now anyway I suppose.
