So, it seems that firefox 27 has been out for few days but I still don’t see update coming. How long is it usually for firefox update to hit OpenSuse Repo?
I’m using OpenSuse 13.1 with Packman, OSS, Non-OSS and Update repository enabled. Current Firefox version is MozillaFirefox-26.0-4.2.x86_64.
I asked because it has been more than 3 days since new firefox version was released and I wondered if there was something wrong with my update or maybe I missed a necessary repository. Still, i think it should not take this long.
Its often in some Linux flavors that updates are held back sometimes, especially if its a non essential upgrade.
Sure new releases might fix bugs but there could be regressions, unless its a major security patch its never rushed.
Patience is a virtue.
Yes, there are security issues. However, we are running linux. That means that we are not running firefox as root. So it is a lot harder to exploit a firefox security problem on linux.
Thanks all, I see the point not to rush packaging software unless it is really necessary. Middle ground between stability, security and the latest software I suppose. It just that I’m used to get firefox update on the same day or the next day on Windows and Ubuntu, not complaining here
If you were in charge of distributing a very popular program, wouldn’t you test it a few days before you launched it for thousands of users? Sure, Mozilla tests it but they probably don’t test it for openSUSE specific problems.

I got it from the openSUSE 13.1 update repo this morning. Installed and
appears to work ok so far.

Yeah each distro has its own policies for upgrades, some dont even use the latest as a choice in favor of stability.
Like Mageia using Firefox ESR or debian using iceweasel (debians in house unbranded build of firefox) ESR on stable.

I’m sure you’d rather it worked than be released before it was fully
tested, no?
Thanks. I raised this question more because I don’t familiar with OpenSuse update policies towards firefox update. Now that I know, I’m okay with few days delays for testing purpose. But I notice on OpenSuse I get less frequent security update for firefox compared on my experience with Ubuntu that usually have several security updates between releases. I’m not sure if this is the case with this particular version or policy in general.

Then patience is going to be needed, because it takes time to verify that
the package works properly.
The packages are maintained largely by volunteers (though some have suse.com addresses). It’s important to bear that in mind.
