Update Skype

I have openSUSE Leap 15.1, 64-bit. My desktop environment is KDE.

I installed the Snap version of Skype following these instructions:
https://snapcraft.io/install/skype/opensuse

Skype works as expected, with the exception that it keeps on telling me that there is a newer version and that I should run my package manager to install it. The version that I have installed is 8.47.0.59.

Needless to say that when I run “zypper up” no Skype update is presented. Same results when I run “sudo snap install skype --classic”.

How do I update Skype?

Could it be you called the package by the wrong name?

I think most of us who use skype on openSUSE use a different method for installation, and obtain skype direct froom microsoft (?) and not via the method you employed.

Most follow the openSUSE skype wiki: https://en.opensuse.org/Skype

On my openSUSE-15.0 GNU/Linux the package is called “skypeforlinux”.

oldcpu@linux:~> rpm -q skypeforlinux
skypeforlinux-8.51.0.86-1.x86_64

Can you go to YaST > Software Management, and search for Skype and confirm you have the name correct? Assuming you do , then Is it possible for you to delete your current Skype install, and then re-install using the above Link?

Its possible for the packager packaged skype that you are using, the packager not bothered to maintain an updated skype packaging.
.

Should you not be using snap to update and not zypper?

If you search for Skype on software.opensuse.org, you will see a message:

Please get skype from skype.com.

If you follow this advice you will get the latest version of Skype and it will set up the appropriate repository so that you can use YaST or zypper to update it.

John, I’m not sure where you got this from. THIS is what appears if one searches for skype at software.opensuse.org.

@tb75252: I would suggest you remove the snap version that you installed, first, and then just follow the link and choose the appropriate repo for your version of openSUSE.

Hm, strange. Like John, I get https://software.opensuse.org/search?utf8=✓&baseproject=openSUSE%3ALeap%3A15.1&q=skype
when I search for Skype. And ir says at the top: “Please …”.

And what’s weirder still, is that today, I see exactly what you both have been seeing (even my colours are different than what I’m used to). I don’t know what’s happening.

I uninstalled the Snapcraft version of Skype and, following your suggestion I installed the one as explained in the wiki link you gave me.
Let’s see if Skype gets updated automatically by YaST’s Software Management the next time that a new version comes out…
