Update Problem

I am unsure if I put it in the right place, but it seemed the most relvant forum to me, to discuss the update issues (since updates are critical sometimes, so they are not “just” applications)…
Whatsoever, the problem is, I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE
I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(…) package… It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don’t think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem. Could anyone please help e fix this thing? I shall be really obliged.

Packages that are updated, download and install incrementally - so if as you say, it gets half way then stops, then half of the packages should be installed.

Try updating a few packages at a time, via software management. And/Or uncheck the package you think is causing the problem.

Or from a su - terminal you could try zypper

zypper up

Well right now I am having another (baseless) go on the same old update method again. I shall try Zypper after this one fails… And about that software-management thingy, I am at loss. There are a few instructions given on the page that I mentioned. And even they are supposed to be for 11.2
But when I open YaST my interface is totally different from what is given on the page. :open_mouth:

The package is pulseaudio-lang and the error in the message box goes like:

Cannot access installation media
Index of /update/11.2
Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0 (Medium 1).
Check whether the server is accessible

And by the way, it’s not like the other packages are installed. After pulseaudio-lang fails I skip it. After that all the further updates tend to keep failing. In fact none of the upcoming packages install. Eventually I have to abort the operation and when I start it again, it goes from the very start.

And Zypper gets stuck at the very same point.

Retrieving: pulseaudio-lang-0.9.21-1.2.1.noarch.rpm [0% (0 B/s)]

NO REPLIES ???

Sounds like is trying to install from the CD/DVD have you disabled the CD/DVD in the repository list?

I think it’s related to a bug in the original release and your proxy setup might not be helping matters.

As has been mentioned, you should disable the CD/DVD media source in the repository list
The different look might be that you use gnome. I always recommend users switch the UI to QT
How To Get QT zypper GUI in GNOME YAST - openSUSE Forums

But anyway, rather than trying a full update, let’s see if we can get just the patches.
su - terminal and do

zypper pchk

then

zypper patch

As goes for installing the QT UI for Zypper, I will do that after I complete updates.
And Updates: I have disabled CD from software repositories. I have tried installing ONLY patches in zypper but that doesn’t help. pulseaudio-lang is installed now (I honestly don’t know how, it automatically managed to ignore the package or resolve the issue), but it now gets stuck on another package xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-87.91.1.i586.rpm… And once I manage to ignore it, it gets stuck on some other package or so. It is really irritating.

Package http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/ was not found on the medium.

Ok. I unchecked xorg-x11-driver-video-7.4-87.91.1.i586.rpm as well and rest of the packages were updated well and good. But I am still unsure what caused this package and the pulseaudio-lang to keep from installing. I guess they are listed in the package list but not available on the server, or something like that. Anyway, I think my system is working fine now. I have even tried installing a few new packages through zypper in terminal and I think the problem is gone for now. I shall bother you nice folks again if I have any other problem. Thank you all very much for helping me out. I certainly do owe you one. Thanks again. Have a nice time.

EDIT

By the way I was wondering if there is any such option as Mark-Thread-As-Solved in here. Is there?

Sometimes you can load the repo’s and they can actually change between the load/refresh and the install of the actual package.
Make sure your repos are all set to auto refresh (actually : oss and non-oss don’t really need to be, but I do it anyway)

There is no Solved option in this forum. This subject has been well discussed so I will not be starting on it again.

Happy to hear you sorted it and it seems like you learnt a trick or two in the process.
