update messages

On several occasions I downloaded a few updates using apper. At the end of the installation of that update I would get a message that the file was not found. Can someone clue me in as to what is taking place.

To begin with, very few people here use Apper (they prefer YaST).

But I guess that those who do use Apper and want to try to help you, want to “see” that message and not a vague descrition.

Then in MY future I will only use yast. I did not know that there was a preferrence. And since I wont be using apper, I guess I wont be seeing that message anymore.

Thanks

I do not use Apper (as you may have guessed), but you must be aware that:
. Apper offers automatic warning of available patches and updates from the repos you have enabled. YaST does not, you have to look for yourself regularly.

. Many have not only switched off Apper , but also deinstalled it (and often also PackageKit) so they can not interfere with a smooth YaST software management operation.

. YaST > Software > Online updates will give you the Security and Recommended updates from the “official” openSUSE repos (OSS and non-OSS through the two Update repos). I do this about once a week.

. Through Yast > Software > Software management you can find newer versions of packages offered on other repos you have enabled (like Packman). E.g. through using the View button and then choose Repositories. In the list at right you will then see the blue newer versions. You can select them for install with Right-click inside that field and then choosing Update all in this list if a newer version is available. I personaly do this repo by repo.

Whenever packagekit informs me of availability of updates i open YaST and install them. I use it a s a update notifier.

Yes, that is something you might want to do. But some people hate it when they start YaST > software > for something and then can not go on because exectly at that moment in time Apper is busy checking.

The same problem btw as we had it earlier when we had the old Update notifier. It very often started to check immediatly after boot (when you had it on a 24 hour interval) and thus you could not start doing Software Management the first 5 minutes after a boot :frowning:

Everybody must develop the best day to day practise for himself here. And it seems that PackageKit is rather usable now, but most here do not see any real advantage in using it above YaST, which is the prefered tool on openSUSE for system Management and thus an openSUSE user will start it automaticaly when thinking he must “manage his ystem”. And when not very many people use PackageKit, one will have problems in getting answers to questions about it here on the forums because nobody of us volunteers volunteered in using it

I rarely had packagekit vs YaST locking issue on 12.1,12.2 . It works just fine on GNOME. But Apper seems to be misbehaving a lo on KDE

For what is worth, during my brief test of 12.3 RC2 (xfce) I have not
hit into this problem yet. And I used yast package manager a lot, as you
can imagine. I have seen the message from the updater that I have
updates available, and it does not go out automatically.

If I may bring an old topic back. I have been using apper as a notifier as you have.
I have been keeping up with my updates. My question is, what to do with all those other updates that apper wants to announce but yast does not mention. Right now my apper shows 31 updates and yast not a one.
I know I can use apper to bring those odd ball updates in but would I want to. What to do?

Which yast do you mean, “YaST Online Updates” or “YaST Software Management”?

YaST Online Updates

YaST and zypper obey “allow vendor change” flag. *Probably apper doesn’t care about that settings.
It is dangerous to update all packages if you are using Non official repos ( anything other than OSS,Non-OSS,Update and Update Non-OSS are unofficial ).

I don’t use any package unless it comes from official openSuse repo. I will continue to ignore apper except as a weekly notifier.
Thankyou

No. Apper behaves as “zypper update”, whereas it’s “zypper dup” that allows vendor change.

That’s rather an overstated generalization. It depends on what repo(s) you add. Dangerous for what? A packman update has never disabled my system, nor has any other repo’s packages, but I add few and exercise caution over which packages I chose to install. I also rarely use the switch in YaST.

Apper allows you to select/deselect updates for installation, as does YaST. The repo configuration is the same in both cases.

Then how do we explain the statement by OP ?

Right now my apper shows 31 updates and yast not a one.

aka YOU. This does the equivalent of “zypper patch”, ie, it only applies
patches, which they come only from the update repos. Only updates of the
official distribution (oss and non oss) is done this way.

If you have extra repos, like packman, or kde-extra-something, as they
don’t do “patches”, their updates will never appear in YOU.

They do in apper, though. They can also be applied with “zypper up”, and
in the standard yast package manager by right click on the list and
select update to newer version if available, or something with
equivalent wording.

Apper should also respect vendor. I can’t vouch for it, as I don’t use
it: but it should.

See my post.

The OP needs to understand it, or provide more details. As originally stated the additional updates can be brought in by Apper, or YaST (not by YOU), and the source repo probably known but not by us.
