Update issue

Hi when i run the updater or through yast i get the following

There was an error in the repository initialization.
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2_KDE_43’: |] Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s)
History:

  • |] Repository type can’t be determined.

looking through my repositories list it seems it has added one from anything i have installed. What are the necessary ones?
Thanks,

I think you might want to delete your KDE 4 entries and renter them as what you posted does not look what I have now after updating them.

Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.2

Perhaps this happened when KDE 4.3.5 was pushed out the door?

Thank You,

Thank you, that solved the error. I remember reading that you should only have the 4 main repositories, but i have 16 lol. so is there any truth to this?

Well it is true that you need to control the number of repositories in your system and if some are getting added for you such as when you use the 1-click install, you might want to remove them after the program was installed as you wanted. You can tell by the naming conventions that you did not make the entry yourself.

A quick look at my repository list shows I have 22 right now. I also use the priority number set to push the ones I want to use to the top. For instance I keep PACK-MAN at the top and put the latest KDE 4.3.5 just under by giving them a higher priority (lower number).

I do know some people have suggested to drop back to the four or five original entries to prevent unwanted updates that might crash a working system, but I don’t think that is necessary but you do not want to have multiple sources of the same file without controlling the priority of their selection.

As always, this is just my opinion on the subject.

Thank You,

Great ill prioritize the list. Thank you very much

You can keep how many repos you want, your choice.
But if you don’t want to spent time on fixing dependencies or other stuff, so it is recommended to keep just FOUR and simply disable others, if you need some applications from it, just enable it and disable after installation of that specific application/s. It will make your life easier.

I have not run into an update issue with multiple repositories enabled except for one time. This may be due to setting the priorities for the update sources in the oder I wish to use. However, I did seem to get a push update from openSUSE 11.1 to 11.2 that did not go well and for which I was unprepared to deal with. So, I do not disagree with your suggestion to disable sources you do not wish to get an update from all of the time. May I ask which four you keep enabled?

Thank You,

Open YaST, go to software repos window and you will see the above titles there.

Thank you very much for the information.

You are most welcome.
