Yes, I’ve upgrated from SuSE 9.1 to openSuSE 11.3. I’ve done this because I’ve to do it for a customer and wanted to test it in our office before doing it in the customer’s office.
Well, Yast has upgrated 1550 packages in 40mn without problems. At reboot I had the message Warning : unable to open initial console.
I’ve been searching now for 3 days …
I’ve booted the option rescue system and verified the contain of the following files
device.map
root in grub
menu.lst where I had console=ttyS0 which I deleted because I don’t use a com port
fstab
The message appears at boot after the line :
Freeing unused kernel memory : 204Ko freed
I haven’t any error messages before that one.
Does someone have an idea ?
Additional problem is that this machine is our own office server … and tomorrow ends a long week end !

I don’t think you can do this in one step. Assuming you are using the DVD
or offline method, you can only jump over two, at most three versions.
OpenSuSE 10.0 was the first version released by Novell and involved a complete re-design. AFAIK there is no reliable path to upgrade 9.x
So, I’m sure the only logical thing to do is to save your personal files and data to detachable storage then import into a brand new install.
That said, if you currently find yourself with something that “sort of works” you could possibly force update all your installed packages. You should continue to upgrade because 11.3 is also past EOL leaving you vulnerable to exploit.

No, no. I did upgrade at the time from 9.x to 10.x without problem, there
was no break.

Thanks to all
But, now I just can’t wait anymore for an answer to my problem which in fact is the error message and not the question to update or not to update. Work is done. Problem is here.
I’ve decided (for our server) to install from zero. This will be faster for us.
This solution is not satisfying me as I wanted really to know the answer …
Thanks again.

There is no direct answer - you have to read the documentation and apply
the recommendations there. And I refuse to write here those recommendations
again.
I thought you said you were testing the upgrade on another machine
different from the one the client uses, to study the procedure. Well, I
tell you, it is not possible to upgrade that distance and expect it to
work. You have to upgrade in smaller steps. Test it correctly and you will
see that it works.
One thing more: do not hurry. Dress up slowly when you are in a hurry.
