Update from 11.4 to 12.1

Howdy

Like the title said, I’ve updated openSUSE from 11.4 to 12.0 from repositories, the update was succesfull but i think im having a little problem with my video.

When the systems starts up, grub loads OK but i select my desktop and the screen turns black, then i cannot do anything else.

Here some screens about this:

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/908b/6e91tmsj04yql1m5g.jpg

Im sorry to bother, bue can anyone give me a hand to solve this? - or maybe to recover my last config of openSUSE 11.4 if there’s a way to do it.

I’ve tried by “nomodeset” but i don’t know how to proceed.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a special video card e.g. nvidia or ati?

swerdna

Your (very nice looking) picture of the Grub OS selection menu does not show us that you typed in the nomodeset kernel load command which you would do here before you press the enter key. Also, you did not indicate if you gave the Failsafe entry a try either and what result that might have.

Thank You,

Hi Swerdna,

I’ve a ATI 6850 I thought that the vga was the causing of all this, but in terminal failsafe mode i activated the repo and try to update it, i dunno if that do something.

Thanks for answer,

**
Hi **jdmcdaniel3 **
with the pic i was trying to show that the system was updated to openSUSE 12, the thing is (sorry if my post wasn’t clear) i read something about to start up with “nomodeset” but i dont know how to use it, i just typed nomodeset in the screen (ej: VGA=nomodeset) and then i was in console mode, i activated the nic and tried to update the system but said “there’s nothing to do” with ATI repo active.

Thanks to both.

So, looking back at your screen, you would just type in nomodeset and press the enter key and that is it. No need for anything else to be typed in.

Thank You,

Yes, but i already did that, like i said before. My desktop is not loading.

Do you know if there is a way to go back to 11.4?

That would be 12.1.
Anyway, have you read this?

Check inconsistencies using level 3. How many repos did you have active
when you did the dup?

Yes, restore the backup you surely made before upgrading >:-)

It is possible if you don’t have a backup, I tested it myself a few times
when I did my migrations when 12.1 came out.

Change the repos over to 11.4 repos and then do a ‘zypper dup’.

But it might be more helpful if you posted the output (in code tags,
please) of:

zypper lr

You can do this from a terminal (hit ctrl+alt+f1 and login with your user
login - then do:

su -

and enter the root password (probably the same as your user password).

Howdy,

I’ve listed the repos in filesafe mode, (cause i can’t enter in graphic mode) but i dont know how to export the code to post in the forum, so far im in windows partition to check the forum.

Maybe this screen would help?

The repo from ati 12.1 would have the next url http://geeko.ioda.net/mirror/ati/openSUSE_12.1

I’ve tried with both, 11.4 and 12.1

Ps: If you can tell me how can i export the zypper lr to a file i would be grateful.

Thanks to all,

Yes, but let it be “zypper lr --details > file.txt”, we need to see the
URL. I suspect repeated repos.

I really don’t know what else to do. In 11.4 I didnt have this problem with my vga.

Maybe i should recover the system back to 11.4.

Video works similarly in 11.4 and 12.1. Something went wrong, and there is
no warranty that doing a revers dup would work.

You sure you did the nomodeset right? The line should be “vga=0x317 nomodeset”. You can find more info here:

SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE

Yes, that didnt work.

Anyway I’ve tried unpluggin one of my hdd’s (boot in console mode was showing a message with one partition) and now im in filesafe mode,

Im trying to install ATI driver with Yast, in a very low resolution desktop and Gnome 3 :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll keep you informed.

Finally… is working…

I’ve installed ati driver and im in.

I want to thank you all for helping me, you helped me a lot.

The problem is solved.
