happy you found the problem and a solution, but wait! you should NOT
be ssh’ing out while signed into a terminal as root…

well, i think instead it far better to ssh to the distant machine as a
normal user and THEN become root on the distant machine (which
hopefully has a completely different, and very secure root password)…

and, since you didn’t answer my question, let me just throw in: you
should never log into KDE/Gnome/etc as root, ever…
