Unwanted Suspend on Battery Power

sometimes when the notebook is on battery power it goes on suspend itself
today f.e. I was typing a test and after pressing a key the nb entered the suspend mode without any action from my side
this was happened also on other tasks, as entering the pw on Yast
is appearing once a wile
I’ve tried to update to TW (I’ve an image of 13.1 made after a fresh install and full updates to recovery) ma the annoyance remain
the full DVD passed the Media Check

where can I look for this inconvenience, or is there any advice?

Thanks

openSUSE 13.1 on Panasonic CF 53 i5 2.7 GHz with Intel 4000

You did not mention your which DE you are using.

I use KDE and by going:
Configure Desktop > Hardware > Power Management
This gets you to the Configure the Energy Saving options which allows you to adjust when a laptop will suspend a session.

Yes, sorry, I’m using KDE

the options in energy saving are ok and they seems to work accordingly

my problem is the auto suspend while on battery power doing any activity, but yesterday I was using the battery for about 6/7 hours and it didn’t occurs

so let’s see today how it is

the KDE installation on 32 bit system (CF-29, i855)) didn’t shows this behavior yet

the CF-53 with 64 bit installation is now with my daughter and I can’t test it anymore

I will test on new machine when it comes (Dell Precision M4800 FHD)

cheers

this problem still happens on CF-53 with KDE 64 bit, it didn’t occur in the other two machines and it is irrespective on using 13.1 or Tumbleweed

today I was having this issue three or four times while typing a document but it may occur under other tasks too

any suggestion how to solve this or where to look to understand what’s going on?

Check in the PowerManagement -->Energy Savings and Activity settings. Click on the Plasma tab and check if you have a setting for Suspend where the time is set to a low number.

I would also create a new user via Yast and see if it’s happening under a new user name.

Hi,
I’m back with the same problem, sometimes also in AC power

I’ve tried new installations, upgrading the kernel to latest stable, upgrading to Tumbleweed but not any improvement.

Now I’m with 13.1 K 13.11.10.11, tried also 3.14.4 but anytime the suspend may happens, and for many times before I can get back to desktop again

I created a new user with yast but immediately after login it went on suspend

in PowerManagement -->Energy Savings and Activity settings I can see Desktop tab only in Activity Settings were is selected ‘Don’t use special settings’, I also select ‘Do as’ in different option but not results

in Energy Saving
AC Tab, Suspend is disable
in Battery Tab, Suspend after 10 m

I don’t know how to get off of this impasse… :frowning:

Delete ~/.kde4/share/config/powermanagementprofilesrc. Then log out and log back in.
Do you have a feature called use separate setting (advanced users only)? Try using it.

Also check .xsession-errors in your /home directory and make sure pm-utils is installed.

On another note I would update to KDE4.13.1. IMHO It feels more stable.

**Update to 4.13x

Version: 13.1**

The Current repository will always keep you updated to the latest stable version of KDE4.

Hi Romanator,

thanks for your attention

I’ve tried everything you suggested , and after any change, the unwanted suspend happens, on battery or on AC, today allways on AC
sometimes continues repetitively without let me login easily after that unwanted suspend

.xsession-errors I can’t open but I can open a .xsession-errors-:0 file there

I’ve a SSD and pm-utils was removed following this:

https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/ssd-in-opensuse#TOC-Automatic-TRIM:-by-boot.local-by-cron-or-by-discard

anyway I reinstalled it without improvement

the only thing that remains to try is KDE 4.13 but now, and for two months, I’m with bad connection speed and frequent and big updates can be a problem for me https://forums.opensuse.org/images/smiliesnew/sad.png

There could be an IRQ that is triggering these events. Do you have laptop-mode-tools and powertop installed? Did you have this problem with a hard drive or did this always exist with openSUSE 13.1?

  • laptop mode will reduce the number of writes, which improves the lifetime of an SSD
  • laptop mode makes writes bursty

For reference read: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop_Mode_Tools

powertop was installed, now I’m installing laptop mode and will see tomorrow

I would try with a different desktop. Find out if it is a system issue
or a desktop issue.

Why not?

Is it zero bytes?

If not, get yourself root. “su”.

Found something. Have a look at “man systemd-suspend.service” and “man
systemd-sleep.conf”.

Maybe you can just disable systemd-suspend.service.

What I was looking for and did not find is a way to inhibit it, but I
know it exists.

…]

Found another thing. In “/etc/systemd/logind.conf” there are some
entries. For instance,

HandleLidSwitch=ignore

impedes the laptop from suspending when the lid is closed.

But all that are attempts to block hibernation, the root cause is that
something thinks, erroneously, there is not battery. Battery level is
incorrectly read, I assume.

Hi robin,
yes, is zero bytes

in ‘Trying a different desktop’ you mean Gnome or others DE different than KDE?

today is behaving good, no unwanted suspend happens after using it for several hours on battery power, will try the AC also

my configuration now:
kernel 3.14.4 & 3.11.10
no pm-utils, laptop-mode-tools installed,
I’m ready to intall KDE 4.13 when I can get good speed

Ok, so no log.

Yes, absolutely. You can have several installed simultaenously. Try LXDE
first. It is very plain and no frills. Then xfce, then gnome… it does
not matter if you don’t like them, it is for testing. If one of them
works, you can use it for doing things while searching for a solution.

And you can boot to text mode, and use yast there to install things, if
the desktop dies or suspends.

laptop-mode is very configurable.

Hi robin,
but I’ve a log in .xsession-errors-:0

Well, if things keep going wrong than I may consider to install a different DE

I’m thinking that Romanator and You are probably right in suspecting something related to HW

Today is good and it may go on for some days without problem but when happens it may be for other days

It may happens anytime, while I’m typing a document, inserting the password on Konsole, on Yast, on a website etc.
it is not related to any particular event or to the notebook lid

Follow Up

Tuning your SSD

I would recommend that you add the line below to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" " in /etc/default/grub

elevator=deadline

Resave the file changes. Run “grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg” (without quotes) and reboot your system.

Using the Deadline I/O scheduler is a best practice. The Deadline scheduler provides the best performance under the majority of workloads
It yielded a higher throughput in smaller workloads and performs equally to the CFQ scheduler in the larger workloads.

For your additional tuning information: http://doc.opensuse.org/products/draft/SLES/SLES-tuning_sd_draft/cha.tuning.io.html

Hi Romanator
already did

update…

ufter my last post got two suspend in evening, one on battery one on AC

Yesterday the suspend happens many times, battery or AC

update to KDE 4.13 but right after got a suspend

I look to lxde but it wants to download half gnome

tried netrunner rolling live dvd, it also went on suspend one time while on battery >:(

I’m start thinking that this NB is not suited for Linux :open_mouth:

laptop freshly powered on,
opened Firefox, while typing the first letter of a page form it went on suspend
coming back with login screen after pressing the power button the time was 13:26

I don’t understand much of it but I record, here and in the log I consulted before this time, is saying at 13:26:18 of a ‘Lid closed’ and ‘Lid opened’ where I was not doing anything like that

I attach a part of System Log file taken from Yast

I hope may be of any help…
