Unsupported combination of hardware platform x86_64 and bootloader grub2-bls

Attempting to re-install TW on a laptop that was previously running TW. (New SSD)

Installer tries to set up as bios-boot.

Setting the partitions manually for efi boot gets error, “Unsupported combination of hardware platform x86_64 and bootloader grub2-bls” which doesn’t even make sense.

How is x86_64 not compatible with grub2-bls?

What is the iso used? Full name please.

Check if you’re on UEFI or legacy BIOS mode. :face_with_monocle:

I believe the option to choose the old grub2 bootloader is still present during installation. Hopefully someone can confirm! :scroll:

Yes. In fact, the motherboard doesn’t even give an option to not be UEFI.

Install still fails no matter if grub2-bls or grub2-efi is chosen.

And, of course, trying it the installer’s way with bios-boot results in a non-bootable disk.

Are you reusing existing partitions ( either from previous install, or from using some exteral tool ) ?

Oh, and how was the USB created ?

Tried modifying installer’s partitions (wrong use of bios boot) and tried deleting all partitions and re-created new using installer built-in tool.

USB created using dd

Hi, and the /boot/efi partition is type ef00 and is 2-4GB (I recommend 4GB) , use systemd-boot which is the default going forward. Likewise, the disk is configured for GPT

The default used by the installer is 1 GB. (This USB key drive installed TW on another machine without problems and used a 1 GB partition for /boot/efi.

Disk is GPT partition table.

New information: I was able to make the laptop boot after the “unsupported combination” install by using the USB key drive installer and it’s boot system option.

However, TW complains that it cannot update the bootloader because “Can’t determine firmware arch.”

Solved. The laptop was booting the non-UEFI side of the installer USB key. I needed to edit the bios boot choices (not just F12 temporary boot) and explicitly delete all other choices but the UEFI side of the installer USB key.
