On a different place. Only the memory should be stressed during a memory
test, and a bit the cpu. The hard disk is idle.

But…

According to the SMART text you posted, your hard disk is indeed
overheating (67ºC), and reports damage because of that. That is strange.

But I suspect that laptops are prone to this problem. I place mine on
top of a laptop-sized fan.

I have swapped the RAM modules between two machines and ran Mtest86 on both, the problem machine ran the test for 35 minutes with the different RAM stick before shutting down. I ran Mtest86 on the other machine, on the RAM from the problem machine for 8 hours with no issues.

I noticed that above the CPU, on both machines the temperature of the keyboard was noticeably high, all this suggests that Mtest86 does stress the CPU.

Does anyone know of a Mtest86 alternative that includes showing CPU temp sensor output?

I have disassembled the machine and removed the fan/heatsink combo, there is not as much air flow blockage as I would like to have seen, but the paste on the heatsink is only in contact with about half of the CPU heatsink area, and the paste is dry. I will clean any airflow blockage, and clean, and apply new paste. I’m also going to insist he use a cooling pad under the laptop.

A virtual keyboard has been used up until now because the replacement keyboard for the keyboard issue has not yet arrived, when it does I will assemble the machine and be able to do further testing.

Thanks to all who assisted with this so far.

On a different place.

Yes, strictly speaking, some of this should be on a thread in the hardware section, but I do think that as it may relate to the issues I am having with the install It is worth following up here. It may help to indicate that hardware reliability issues need to be tested for before stating something like “13.2 does not work.”

In this case I had no way of running tests until I had done some repairs to the power supply system, by that time I was committed to a fix.

I would recommend to anyone helping a friend or relative with a hardware issue to run at least a harddisk and RAM check if they can before committing to help.

Definitely sounds like a thermal problem. So all the fans are running full speed? and the paths are clear of dust bunnies and other obstruction? Only thing to do is put new thermal paste on the CPU. It could be about any other component on the MB stopping work or shorting when heated. Even a broken trace can open when heated. My advice buy a new machine that one is not worth the effort

I’d place the laptop over a fan table (sorry, I do not remember the
exact English name). One of those things that plugs to the usb for power.

I have disassembled the machine and removed the fan/heatsink combo, there is not as much air flow blockage as I would like to have seen,

Now I have removed the fan from the heatsink and actually looked in the correct place!
There was a significant restriction to air flow, combined with the thermal paste condition, I believe this is enough to cause the overheating issue.
So I may yet not be wasting time and money on this repair.

Hi
A good old dust wad huh  yes, that and new thermal compound (I use
artic silver) should see a big difference.

It looks like my brothers kids have been using it on the carpet as a vacuum cleaner.
Laptop computers are apparently efficient at collecting cat hair!
