unremovable wirelesspci card BCM4312 Opensuse 11.1 HP DV7

After installing opensuse 11.1 on HP pavilion DV 7 Intel, I had problems to get the wireless working, the device is found but no wireless network found , I have tried to use ndiswrapper with the vista 64 bit driver BCMWL6.inf, but this resulted in the following catastrophy ( I am a newbie, so please correct me )
Under Yast network I get a wired connection eth ??? in stead of wlan0 ( not configured or configurable with ifup ), in the hardware list the device is configured but no wireless entries, iwconfig same thing.

How can I remove this wrongely installed device ?
I tried to do this in /etc/ I did not succeed
I have already followed all pinned steps and much more.

How can you remove hardware wrongely installed or detected from the kernel ? Additional question, found nothing on forums or help

do

lspci -v

and post any wlan and eth info here:

sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware

was ok,
lsmod
module B43 also loaded but no hardware installed ( logical because linux thinks it is an ethernet card and not configured )

how can I upload a printscreen to this forum or is this not allowed ( )

Is the Broadcom both the Ethernet and WiFi card in one device?

Use hosting site like Imageshack

some good info here
http://www.swerdna.net.au/linhowtowireless.html

Oh, and please do NOT take this the wrong way. I’ve been wrestling with my wifi card in a Dell laptop for a couple of weeks and while everything looked fine (loaded modules, etc.) it was just not showing any access points.

Turned out for whatever reason the wireless option was turned OFF in the BIOS! Not sure how it happened (well, I have a sneaking suspicion) but once I turned it on and rebooted I was able to see the access point available at the time!

only wifi

Thank you for the tip but the bios is a little bit small … lol

Thanks to everybody for the quick replay, but the main problem is that YAST thinks the wireless is an ethernet card, unremovable in yast not configurable, so I am stuck, isn’t there an easy way to remove hardware ???

Do you not have a eth point? That would be rather odd - if not.

You are installing software and hardware drivers. Removing hardware is something quite different.

You can uninstall ndiswrapper and win drivers. Go to the ndiswrapper site
NDISwrapper

post the complete output of lspci -v. From there we can see what devices you have & if you have ethernet and wireless. From what you posted so far, your device should work with b43 drivers. Have you set up a connection by clicking on network manager & selecting new connection & following the instructions ?

Andy

p.s the b43 experts are in the wireless forum

the question was wifi and lan in same pci, answer only wifi by the broadcom, separate ethernet ok

o.k.,have you tried the rest of my suggestion re: network manager ? also, if you are using WEP encryption, make sure you use hexadecimal and not passphrase, there are a lot of problems with WEP & passphrase

If you had taken this thr3ead to wireless, AND looked at the threads
describing the BCM4312, you would have saved yourself a lot of time.

The bottom line is that your device probably has a PCI ID of 0x4315,
and is NOT supported by b43 - at least not yet although there has
been a lot of activity on updating the driver for that device. You
will need to use either the Broadcom hybrid driver, or ndiswrapper. If
you choose the latter, you need the Windows XP driver - Vista drivers
don’t work.

Hardware for Linux - Hewlett-Packard (by Broadcom) / BCM4312 802.11a/b/g

in Knetworkmanager, I see the connection I configured as wireless but I get the notification in dutch: geen draaggolf = no signal, no wave … with a red bowl and cross

There are two different cards labeled BCM4312. The a/b/g version has a
PCI ID of 0x4312 and works with b43. The b/g version (no 802.11a) has
a PCI ID of 0x4315 and does not work with b43.

I hope everyone now knows the importance of posting the PCI or USB ID’s.
