I chose to install KDE during the opensuse 12.1 install but whenever I tried it I decided I didn’t like it so I then installed Gnome from the Software Manager.
However now I’m left with lots of duplicate applications such as Konsole and Konquerer.
However I’m not sure whether I can uninstall the packages under the KDE4 Desktop Environment pattern and the KDE4 Base pattern without messing up my system.

It may be better to just back up your files and do a clean install to make sure the KDE libraries you don’t want are cleared out but those our programs use are gone.
Unless there is a janitor program of some sort to clear out lingering libraries after removing KDE desktop environment pattern?
This is a very tricky area. Some dependencies may exist. If you have a large drive I would seriously consider leaving it there. You never know when you might want to switch back.
Use Yast
I would always used Yast. While in Yast, navigate to Options and check mark “Cleanup when deleting packages”. Click on KDE4 Desktop Environment. Select each application and delete one by one.
Since GNOME uses yast-gtk, you can delete yast-qt (if you don’t want KDE).
If your drive is small, I would recommend reformatting and reinstalling with GNOME.

Do a clean install
Or just leave them in. They do not take much disk space. And you may still find a need for some to use under Gnome.
I personaly would wait with a new install until a next openSUSE level and hen do two things in one: cleanup and upgrade.
