Before OpenSuse 11.2 I used some Debian-based distros that used to have a good support for my integrated video card Via Unichrome P4M800 Pro / CN700.
I had 3D running with direct rendering by Mesa.
With OpenSuse I’m having problems to configure my graphics with a good configuration…
I installed the unichrome driver and ran Sax2. It set up my video driver to “unichrome”, but I gad no direct rendering and the renderer string is still “software rasterizer”.
I tried installing the chrome9 driver, but when I ran Sax2 it frozen, and I couldn’t start X anymore, so I uninstalled.
How can I get “Direct Rendering: yes” on OpenSuse 11.2 with this video card?
Is there any good via driver that would give me 3D rendering?
(On Ubuntu 9.04 and Linux Mint 7 the automatic xorg configuration used to set “via” as video driver, and I had 3D)
Same problem in my work T_T, do you have the Mint driver??? if so,
you can try replacing the openSuSE driver

I really would love to do it, but I don’t know how…
Mint is “deb-based”, OpenSuse is “rpm-based”…
Although, Mint has an older kernel than OpenSuse, so I don’t think it would work.
=(
Hi I’m a candidate experiencing the same problem (since 2005) does any one know if there is another rpm based Linux distribution working without this problem? Thank’s a lot for your answer
What would be about fedora or mandriva?
I guess there is pardus a more “oriental” turkish distro of Linux so maybe they would be more compatible with this kind of chinese graphic-chipsets…? I really would like to know if this pardus-distro is also rpm based?
I hope you have all read my “VIA chipset” section in oldcpu’s graphics guide here, particularly the sub-section on OpenGL. The “openchrome” driver is the one I prefer to use on 11.2, but Direct Rendering (DR) doesn’t work for VIA’s Unichrome chipset on 11.2 for any driver. Also, the “openchrome” driver has mysteriously disappeared without warning from the openSUSE Build Service :(.
Good news is that openSUSE 11.3 (available in 16 days from today) has finally managed to implement DR for VIA Unichrome. So far I have only managed to test it on my K8M800 chipset, using the “unichrome” driver packaged in the distro’s normal oss repo. It works as checked with glxinfo and glxgears from command line. It doesn’t appear to work for direct mpeg2 using XvMC, as tested with mplayer or xine.
If you cannot wait a couple of weeks for openSUSE 11.3 or you must have the “openchrome” driver, you can try PCLinuxOS 2010 or Kubuntu. They have worked for me with their “openchrome” driver and DR/3D support included for several years now.
Since installing/updating to 11.3 went so well, and now I’ve had a chance to take a look at the new wiki and the new Package Search facility, I went looking for the “openchrome” driver that was originally available from the OBS. I found packages there for both 11.2 and 11.3 by clicking on “(Search options)” to the right of the entry box and removing the tick from “Exclude user’s home projects”, and then making the appropriate search.
I know the 11.2 version of “openchrome” works, but I have not tested the 11.3 version yet. The “unichrome” driver in the 11.3 distribution’s oss repo provided a good OOTB solution for my K8M800 chip, but later chips will probably need “openchrome”. For more detail, please see my “VIA chipset” section in oldcpu’s graphics guide here.
