Unable to watch maximised iPlayer

I’ve just been sitting around for the last couple of weeks with my head buried in my hands thinking I’ve just bought a new computer that I can’t use with Linux!
However, I was wondering whether installing a graphics card would make any difference to the way graphics are displayed. I’ve been told I can get a card for around £30.00, which wouldn’t exactly break the bank.
Would installing a graphics card DEFINITELY help overcome the problems mentioned above?
I noted today, after having chucked the computer in the corner for the last two weeks and not used it, that even a minimised iPlayer doesn’t produce smoothed out images, since there is still a degree of sticking. However, the ESC button now appears to work, although why that should be I have no idea, since all I have done it install some recent software updates.
Any thoughts out there on the graphics card? If so, can you suggest one that will definitely work?
Many thanks.

Yes
Only you didn’t tell us what card exactly. That could matter.

caf4926,
If I go back to the computer manufacturer - Novatech - and ask them to recommend a card, would you then be able to tell me if it were suitable? If so, can you tell me exactly the type of information that you would need to determine whether it would work OK? Or, could you recommend a card that we know will work with Suse 11.4? Again, I don’t need this for gaming, just to watch streamed tv or DVDs.
Thanks.

I just mean make and model
As you see I list the one I have in my main box…

So if you say for Eg : I plan to use a nvidia 9800GT, will it work.
I can say yes, almost certainly.

Can you tell us about the computer as well?
Is there a link to it?

All information about the computer is listed on 12 and 13 above.
I’ll have a chat with Novatech on Monday and see what they recommend, then I’ll come back to you with some ideas!!
But if anybody else is reading this post and knows of any compatible cards, any advice gratefully received.

You should be able to pick up a card like mine for little money from ebuyer or the likes. I have no problems.

I recommend one with no fan, mine had one and I removed it, replaced it with a special heatsink. Peace at last.

So, do you think this would work?

Novatech GeForce 8400GS 256MB DDR2 PCI-Express - Retail

It should be fine

ebuyer product number: 189234 ?

are they Linux experts?

I would doubt it very much!

Result!

I installed the 8400GS Nvidia graphics card and it worked. I don’t think I’ve ever installed anything quite like this before, so I was stunned to see the thing work when I booted!

However, I am wondering about the drivers. The CD that came with the product said it was Windows only, but clearly something found some drivers from somewhere otherwise the card wouldn’t work, would it?

Should I have asked something on the computer to look for them, or does YaST do this automatically?

BTW, thanks very much for your help so far. I really had thought I would have to go back to using (I can’t say it, you know, products made by the Seattle-based company…)

It is using the built in driver Nouveau

If you want the propriety driver:
nVidia Driver via Repo in 11.3 & 11.4 - Guide

I thought I’d read an article on this somewhere,

you need Mesa 7.11 and xf86-video-intel 2.14

See over at Phoronix:

Hi caf4926,

I did as you suggest and made the changes.

I substituted 11.4 for 11.3, but don’t know if that is correct or not.

However, when I get to the Software Management changes, I don’t know which of the drivers to add, since none seem to correspond to 8400GS, as far as I can see.

Have I done something wrong?

Once the repo has been added and you open software management it normally adds the drivers
But look at this
Some NVIDIA Basics

I’m guessing you’ve cracked it.

nvidia-gfxGO2-kmp-desktop is ticked in the package list, so does this mean Suse is now using this? Is there anything else I must do?

I checked iPlayer and the image quality is very good indeed!

Also you should have x11-video-nvidiaG02

nvidia-gfxGO2-kmp-desktop is correct if your kernel is kernel-desktop
uname -a (will tell you your kernel)

Sorry, temporarily ascended into a heaven in a whirlwind, now back!

This is what the terminal said:

Linux linux-re6b 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Yes, kernel-desktop so you need:
x11-video-nvidiaG02
nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop

Both are ticked! Thank you for all your help.
