Unable to use internet via USB tethering, despite hotloading rndis_host

logs: openSUSE Paste

even after modprobing rndis_host, usb tethering does not seem to work.

could not activate connection: Activation failed:
IP configuration could not be reserved.

The above error appears in nmtui while attempting to activate usb internet via tethering

Mar 23 12:30:07 localhost.localdomain NetworkManager[1034]: <info>  [1742713207.2248] dhcp4 (enp0s26u1u3): activation: beginning transaction (timeout in 45 seconds)
...
Mar 23 12:30:52 localhost.localdomain NetworkManager[1034]: <info>  [1742713252.1774] device (enp0s26u1u3): state change: ip-config -> failed (reason 'ip-config-unavailable', managed-type: 'full')

07 + 45 == 52

No DHCP server replied.

The full message is

IP configuration could not be reserved (no available address, timeout, etc.)

which provides sufficient hints what the problem could be.

Do you have the option to use a WiFi hotspot instead?

I use that “daily”, open a hotspot on my phone and have my computer connect to it. It works likely better because this is more like how normal connections are being made.

On the problem you have with usb tethering, the log shows DHCP is tried but the log stops before we can see the result, likely it fails:

Mar 23 12:30:52 NetworkManager[1034]: <info> device (enp0s26u1u3): state change: config -> ip-config (reason 'none', managed-type: 'full')
Mar 23 12:30:52 NetworkManager[1034]: <info> dhcp4 (enp0s26u1u3): activation: beginning transaction (timeout in 45 seconds

Which device in use?

Cannot open this link.

I do, in fact, use a hotspot everyday as the only source of my internet. However, sometimes I need highspeed internet which is only possible through tethering as my wifi chip supports only 2.4GHz.

ps: USB tethering used to work earlier but not now…

an android device

Hey,
I just realized that,
the android device was at fault. I changed the device and it works flawlessly.

My sincerest apologies
