Unable to swap kernels without being trapped in tty

Hi, I want to install a new kernel, such as liquorix. However, I would be stuck in tty. I have tried to enter startx as a command to get the gui going. However, it would give me an error saying that xinit failed. I then tried to go to /etc/permissions.local, only to find that there is no /usr/bin/Xorg listed in the file. I do not understand why it wouldn’t do anything.
