Unable to open initial device, quitting

Hi

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500 on my lan. When printing from Suse all that comes out on paper is this: “Unable to open initial device. Quitting.”
Output from hp-check is pasted below. Has anyone here experienced the same? I tried to paste the output from hp-check into the message, but the forum did not accept that.

That’s a ghostscript error. It might also be useful to look at /var/log/cups/access_log and error_log. It is probably related to the configured driver. When you installed, did you do so via ‘hp-setup’?

I’d also like to know if ‘hp-testpage’ prints successfully…

I installed hplip with yast. hp-testpage has the same problem. After i ran hp-testpage the lines below appeared in access log. Nothing in error.log

Can you answer my question about how you first configured your printer. (YaST, hp-setup, or CUPS web interface)? It may be the incorrect driver is used.

I also note that the HP Linux page mentions the HP Officejet Pro 8500 requires

Minimum HPLIP version 3.9.2

while you have the following version reported via hp-check

I did it first in yast, but I have done it over again, maybe also in hp-setup. Can’t exactly remember. Should I delete the printer definition and configure the printer again?

Hello,

I was having the same problem with my printer. There are two drivers that come with HP-Lip: one that is a hpijs file and the other is a hpcups file. By default, HP-lip was using the hpijs file and my printer wasn’t working. However, switching to the hpcups made it work.

If you want to try this, simply go to yast>printers and select your HP 8500 and press edit. It should give you a list of available drivers. Just select the one that is your model that is the hpcups file.

You, sir, are awesome! I had the same issue with openSUSE 11.4 on an HP 8500 Wireless (a910). I changed the driver, as you described in your steps above, and I immediately could print over the wireless network! I wonder why it picks hpijs by default?
