unable to mount CD/DVD

Hi!

My CD/DVD-drive used to work when I started using OpenSuse, but lately when I try to play a CD or DVD the icon doesn’t show up and I can’t open the disc using vlc.

It sounds that the system tries to mount the disc over and over and I get an error message that says “Couldn’t mount audio disc (in Swedish)” (if that’s what I’m trying to do) and it says something about a dbus error. Sometimes nothing happens at all when I put a CD in the drive.

I’m using OpenSuse 11.2 and Gnome 2.28.2 on an Acer Timeline 5810TG.

I’m kind of new to Linux, so I appologize if my upcoming questions are dumb. Please, explain things to me in detail.

Sanna

Audio-CDs can not be mounted anyway, unless they are Data-CDs (with for example .mp3s), since they do not contain any filesystem. They are played unmounted.

To provide some more information, please do the following:

• Open a console and become root via ‘su -’

• Run the command

tail -f /var/log/messages

• Insert the media, some more lines will appear. Post these new outputs here.

I get what you’re saying about mounting and Audio-CDs, but the system uses the word “mount”, so that’s what I wrote.

I inserted a DVD and did as you said. I got the following code:

And so on…

I hope this will be of some help. Thanks!

I get what you’re saying about mounting and Audio-CDs, but the system uses the word “mount”, so that’s what I wrote.

Hm, here (on KDE4.4) Audio-CDs always appear to be unmounted and for example the device manager does not offer an option to mount them.

The output suggests that your drive is failing to cope with the media, could you test that with another one?

I solved the issue following the hint found here:
Acer timeline 4810t cdrom problem

I upgraded to bios 2.35 then I changed SATA mode (in bios configuration) to IDE.
I didn’t verify if my previous bios (1.35) worked with SATA mode IDE.

Hoping this helps
