I am using openSUSE 13.1, 64-bit, with KDE as my desktop environment.
Something must have been corrupted in my password file as I am now unable to login. (I am the only user that is set up.)
When I reach the login screen and enter my password, the system tells me that it is not valid.
Is there a tutorial somewhere that will tell me step-by-step what needs to be done in order to solve this problem? I’m not much of a Linux expert…
Did you set the root password to the same value as your first user during
installation (this is the default, so whatever your first user’s initial
password was is the one to try)? If not, have you tried logging in as
‘root’ with the password you specified explicitly for ‘root’?
If none of that works, the openSUSE site has a wiki that has articles on
how to recover your system when you lose your root password.

Try in text mode.
Press ctrl-alt-f1, and log in there.

Also be sure that cap locks is not on. Passwords are case sensitive
… and if a laptop, watch out for numlock.
