I agree with that. The present problem is not covered by the thread title. and will thus not draw the attention of the people with the right knowledge. Specially because it is hidden somewhere in this thread. I encourage the OP to start a new thread about this new problem, with a descriptive title.
Nice to read you are up and running, at least in recovery mode.
From a Lenovo site for model R400 I read:
“Video chipsets:
Intel Integrated Graphics 4500MHD
AMD M82XT 256MB”
So you may have to install or configure an AMD video driver.
As Henk suggested, better start a new thread in the Hardware subforum with a title related to this video problem and posting the result of:
hwinfo --gfxcard
You may get that info from the *buntu install if it is easier to you.
Or you may boot to a text console: just press “E” at the grub boot screen, look for a line beginning with “linux” and add “3” (without quotes) at the end.
Or use IceWM instead of KDE by choosing that option at the login screen until you have your problem sorted out.
Hello oldcpu,
I have tried that with no success. I actually made things worse. After reboot it wouldn’t show the GRUB boot menu to choose between Opensuse and Ubuntu, instead it would give only the text based login and console.
Thanks for the solution though.
Hello hcvv,
I will do this today, as I have some things to take care of in the past couple of days.
Thanks.
Hello OrsoBruno,
I was able to install OpenSUSE half-blinded. What do I mean when I say that, well the Yast installer started with the “No KVM” video option, but it would show me only the top half side of the installer screens, so I could not see what selection options I would get at each screen. I took a leap of faith and tried with Enter at each screen to see if the default selection option was to go forward, and it worked, in 99% of the installing screens, except when I was asked to write and begin the install process, but it was OK, as I hit the right arrow and selected “Yes” to begin the installation.
What is interesting is that when I booted OpenSUSE and updated the OS I saw the intel and AMD GPU video driver packages being installed, which confirms your finding on that Lenovo website regarding the two GPUs being present on the same laptop (what where you thinking Lenovo??? god ****!!).
I will start a new thread today in the Hardware section and post the results of running those lines of code that you mentioned.
Thanks a lot.
