Unable to install Leap 15.5 on a new computer (but 15.4 works)

So I just purchased a new computer. It’s a Lenovo IdeaCentre 5i. A link to the system with all the specs is here:

https://www.newegg.com/p/1VK-0003-1MJP5?Item=9SIB0GJJS00134

It’s not listed on the lenovo web site as having been tested for linux, but it’s been a while since I had any problem installing linux on a PC that I wasn’t worried. Unfortunately, I’m not able to boot up anything Leap 15.5 (though 15.4 works).

Facts that I don’t think are important are: secure boot is disabled in BIOS, and I’m trying to install from a bootable USB drive.

So, I have downloaded the full offline image (x86_64) and put it on a usb stick. When I boot from it, I do get the menu where I can choose Installation, but then within a few seconds, it hangs at the lines:

openSUSE Leap 15.5 Installation program v7.0.32.4 (c) 1995-2020 SUSE LLC <<<
Starting udef…

and then it hangs forever.

Based on a similar complaint (but different hardware) saw that someone said they ran into problems with a newer kernel, I decided to try 15.4, and that worked fine. I was able to install Leap 15.4 with no problem (and the system boots fine). I then did an upgrade to 15.5 (the upgrade went fine), but then the system no longer boots. It goes quickly to a black screen, and I can’t see any indication of what it’s doing or where it’s hanging.

I’m hoping that if I can get the installation media to boot (with some kernel flag perhaps), then I’ll be able to get the installed version to also boot.

Any suggestions? At this point, I have not started using the system, so I’m willing to upgrade it to 15.5 again, or test whatever is needed, but I’m not sure where to go because this is beyond my knowledge.

Any help will be appreciated.

At the Grub bot loader menu when you first start up hit eto edit the grub launch command. Find the line that loads the kernel and delete the quiet and splash=foo, then add nomodeset=1to the end and see what that does. If you can even get to a console login that will be progress. Don’t be afraid to take pics with your phone and post them here if need be. After all, they are worth 1000 words…

Interesting. I did that and it booted all the way into the installation program.

So, it doesn’t really tell what the problem was, but it does mean that I may be able to proceed.

I’ll upgrade the 15.4 system to 15.5, edit the grub entry as above and see what happens.

And that worked. I was able to boot into 15.5. I appreciate the help. Next I’m going to learn exactly what these changes all mean for my own knowledge, but this was what I needed.

Thanks again
