What sort of error message do you get? Are you running the installer
from a terminal window (which would probably also give useful output as
to what’s missing)?

The system starts in a terminal rather than in X? In that case, login as
root and check /etc/inittab - look for the line that reads:
id:x:initdefault:
Where “x” is a number - what number is it (it should be 3 or 5)?

i’m not so familiar with Sun Java System Web Server 7, and i doubt
many here are…
i’ve not looked at Sun’s install documentation, but i really doubt
that there is a need for a graphical environment as most industrial
strength web server software runs without a GUI…and, i’d guess the
install works great without a GUI also…
you have a copy of their docs don’t you? is your question not covered
there…
anyway, i do not believe your Web Server 7 install problems have
anything to do with an openSUSE fault so i’d suggest you go to the Sun
install experts at http://forums.sun.com/
i did see on the Sun site that they offer training courses and
certifications in Web Server 7 for only $3,500, i think you can
reserve a training slot at:

Perhaps there isn’t a graphical installer?
Might be a question best asked of Sun, since it’s their software…
