Unable to get Wifi connection to access internet (clean 15.1 plasma5 install)

NetworkManager was disabled but now is running and I am online with usb tethering (wired connection). I have not seen any other info to help with this problem.

Since my cancer has turned terminal, I wanted 15.1 Plasma 5 to be my best and last Linux OS and was hoping for less stress with this install.
Looking forward to some easy advice from the regular mods here. I am very pleased with clean icon themes and plasma 5 look and feel so far.

Cheers,
Peter

PS: Formally posting as Peter_Abc on nntp.opensuse.org (somehow these groups are not accessible in last 2 days for me)

NNTP access has been disabled, due to ownership changes for SUSE and a reconfiguration of openSUSE to adapt to those changes. There are efforts to get it back.

As for WiFi – can you tell us what WiFi adapter you are using? Did it work with previous openSUSE releases (and which release was that)?

Thanks for the feedback on this. This has been one of my favourite features I enjoyed at openSUSE since 2008. I have a lot of saved threads but can not access the info in this off state.

Yes, it is an Intel Centrino Advanced N-6250 (worked well before with Leap 15.0, even had it working at first start of NetworkManager on this install).

Thanks for your quick response and I am sure you and the team will get this sorted sooner than later.

Cheers,
Peter

That might be a kernel issue. You can try booting to an older kernel. Select the “Advanced options” menu entry, and that will give you a choice of kernels (assuming that you have more than one installed kernel).

When I did a clean install recently, notwithstanding the installer saying NetworkManager would be used, wicked was in fact installed instead and I had to go into YaST>Network Settings>Global Options and set NetworkManager. I think I also deleted /etc/resolv.conf before rebooting but I am not sure if that was actually necessary.

I did try the kernel option but that was not my issue. I played around with the WiFi settings options and now I can get online. I think it was the setting with “available for all users” that might have been the cause. I disabled it and added all users across to side that can access the connection and adjusted how the password is saved (unencrypted). Could be something else I adjusted, but it is working now and I will leave at that.

Thanks for your assistance.

Peter

I’m glad it is working.

And I have also found it best to have the password saved unencrypted.

Hi John,
I know this routine well but this time there was no option to choose NetworkManager. The service was disabled and I had to run ‘systemctl enable NetworkManager.service’ and then ‘systemctl start NetworkManager.service’ before I had the option to choose again. I got it working once and then got locked out again. But adjusting my connection settings seems to have fixed the problem thus far.

Thanks for your feedback.

Cheers,
Peter
