I have been searching the web for a solution to a couple of problems I am having with hardware, I am Unable to get the fan or wireless working on my Toshiba U505 S2950 Laptop. I am new to using OpenSuse but I have used Ubuntu and other distros. I have not been able to solve these issues yet and I have tried several things that I have found on various forums

Open a terminal and post result of

/sbin/lspci -nnk

From this we can see your hardware and drivers

Here’s a link that shows this driver should work with your card.
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=rtl8192se&project=driver:wireless

You should be able to download the appropriate firmware and driver from the link below. Make sure to download the correct driver for your kernel.
software.opensuse.org: Search Results

On second thought, it’s probably best to add the repository and install it with yast so you don’t have to manually update every time you update the kernel. Here’s the repo link.

THANKS!! Updating now. I will post the results

Hope that goes OK

When you say the Fan isn’t working. You mean the CPU cooler?

yes the CPU cooler wasn’t working and it still seems to be very slow but the computer has not overheated so it is probably fine. And wireless is also working perfectly now. I have one issue though that is strange, when the machine boots up now I have a few new boot options and and one less. originally I had the following Grub menu…

openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.3
Failsafe – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.3
Windows 1
Windows 2

I now have the following options in my grub menu…

openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.4 (pae)
Failsafe – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.4 (pae)
Xen – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.4
Desktop – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.4
Failsafe – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.4 (desktop)
openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.3
Failsafe – openSUSE 11.3 - 2.6.34.7-0.3
Windows 1

Notice I gained a few options and lost the “windows 2” option. I do not completely understand what all that means but I tried some of the options and they resulted in an error. I would like to remove ones that I do not need and add the “windows 2” option back. The windows 2 option boots to the toshiba recovery. I would like to edit the grub without crashing the machine but if it can’t be done I will deal with it.

I am very happy the CPU cooler and wireless are now working, I thought I was going to have to go back to using M$ Windows.

Thank you!

You can use YaST to remove grub entries. Its under System->Boot Loader

Thanks, worked like a charm!
